Chapter 353: A Plea That Didn’t Outrank Order

Unlike the first time this happened, River didn’t run.

Every nerve in her body screamed at her to turn, to flee, to disappear down the corridor the way she had the first time, when the grief was fresh and the betrayal was new and her legs made the decision before her heart could stop them. Her feet wanted to move. Her chest wanted to collapse.

The girl who had spent her entire life making herself small in rooms where her presence felt borrowed wanted to fold inward and vanish.

She stayed.

Because she had already run once, and running had killed them all.

The grief still hit in full. It rose from the floor of her chest like floodwater, filling every space inside her that composure usually occupied, and the composure didn’t stand a chance.

This grief was heavier. It was carrying the weight of a field and a crown in the grass and dark veins on a face she loved and a spear through a chest and a wolf king dying on a gate and her father’s blood on ceremonial armor and her own death, the feeling of dark magic hitting her chest in the exact place where she was holding a dead man’s hand.

Her Fae magic carried it outward. The pulse moved through the courtyard the way grief moves through water: in every direction at once, without permission, without control.

It washed across the first three rows of chairs and the gasps that had been forming in response to Vesper’s accusation died in the throats that were producing them, replaced by something heavier, something that pressed against the sternum and stole the breath.

Grief. And underneath it, woven through it, braided into it like a thread of steel through silk: resolve.

The combination was wrong. Grief and resolve were opposing forces, the first wanting to collapse and the second refusing to allow it, and the two of them together produced a frequency that landed on every Fae in the courtyard with the dissonance of a chord played in two keys at once.

Lucian felt it. His pupils, already blown, dilated further. His body, already rigid from the scent, went statue-still as the wave hit him through the fated matebond he had never asked for and had never been permitted to acknowledge, and the grief that flooded through the thread was so deep and so total that his wolf stopped screaming mate and started howling in response to a pain it could feel and could never reach.

The Fae King’s hand closed around the arm of his chair. His blood-sense, the gift that let him feel the emotions of his children with surgical precision, received River’s grief at full amplitude, and what he felt from her made no sense.

The magnitude and depth were wrong. This was the grief of a woman who had lost everything, and she was standing in a courtyard surrounded by everyone she loved, and all of them were alive, and the grief was still there, enormous and real and carrying a weight that a bonding ceremony interruption could never, by any rational measure, produce.

Tristan felt it the hardest.

The chosen tie between them was a bridge, and the bridge carried everything. Her grief poured through it and filled his chest with a force that physically rocked him backward, his body absorbing an emotion so massive it overrode the freeze that Vesper’s words had induced.

His daze broke. The man who had been standing at the altar with his jaw locked and his mind paralyzed by the involuntary recognition of a fated tie snapped back into his own body with the jarring, sudden clarity of a man being pulled from deep water.
