The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate novel Chapter 362

Chapter 362: Deliberate. Try Again.

River would have traded the world to be back in Tristan’s arms, but the Goddess had other plans. For two days, she foolishly hoped that maybe things could work out and Tristan could just ignore the woman in the dungeon.

But she knew. She had always known. Sometimes love doesn’t look like holding on. Sometimes it looks like letting go, and the letting go is the hardest thing love ever asks for, and love asks for it anyways.

The corruption came back on the third day.

Tristan woke at dawn with dark veins threading across his forearms, the black lines surfacing beneath his skin with the patient precision of a disease that had been temporarily evicted and had returned with a lease agreement. The healers confirmed what the first round had taught them: the fated tie was keeping him alive, but the tie required participation, and participation meant proximity, and proximity meant Vesper Willow.

After that, River insisted she move back into her old quarters in the palace.

Tristan went to the dungeon that afternoon.

He sat across from Vesper at the cracked table, in the same chair, under the same single light, and he said the words that River had begged him to say and that every cell in his body rejected.

"I will honor the fated tie."

Vesper studied him. The study was long, clinical, the assessment of a woman calculating the structural integrity of a surrender and determining whether it could support the weight of the plans she intended to build on top of it.

"Say it again," she said. "Without looking like you are swallowing poison."

"I will honor the fated tie," Tristan repeated, and the second time was worse than the first, because the first time was a decision and the second time was a commitment, and the distance between those two things was the distance between stepping off a ledge and hitting the ground.

Vesper was released from the dungeon that evening. She was given quarters in the eastern wing, adjacent to Tristan’s, with a guard rotation that the prince insisted upon and the elders approved.

The terms were clear: political partnership, public proximity, private distance. She would attend court. She would attend meals. She would exist in the radius required by the fated tie to keep the corruption at bay. Everything else was negotiable.

The corruption receded. The dark veins faded. Tristan’s magic stabilized.

The leash was working.

THE FIRST WEEK

Vesper Willow settled into the palace the way a fire settles into a building: slowly at first, consuming the edges, then accelerating.

She was charming in public. The performance was immaculate, calibrated for the court, for the elders, for every noble whose opinion could be leveraged into influence. She smiled at the right people. She deferred to Atlas with the practiced grace of a woman who understood that the king was the obstacle and the obstacle was best managed through the appearance of respect. She spoke about the fated tie with the reverence of a woman who had been blessed by the Goddess and was grateful for the blessing.

The public didn’t buy what she was selling. At least not at first, because of her performance at Tristan’s bonding ceremony. But they tolerated her.

Atlas and Tristan continued with their hushed conversations that she would never know about.

In private, all of her charm evaporated.

River found the first note on the fourth day. It was on her vanity, written in a woman’s handwriting.

The eastern wing has better light. You should consider relocating. Preferably to a different palace.

River folded the note. She placed it in a drawer. She said nothing to anyone, because saying something would mean involving Tristan, and involving Tristan would mean watching him fight a woman he was medically obligated to coexist with.

She had burned a star off her neck so he wouldn’t have to fight anymore.

The second note arrived on the sixth day.

I had breakfast with your husband this morning. Or is he my husband now? The legalities are so confusing. Either way, the eggs were excellent.

Technically because the ceremony was interrupted, Tristan wasn’t River’s husband. The technicality was a blade, and Vesper knew exactly where to place it.

River was already back in her old quarters.
