The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate novel Chapter 397

Chapter 397: A Word.

He moved down the steps without responding to Calder. His stride was measured, unhurried, carrying the specific authority of a king who did not accelerate for chaos.

He walked past the two fighting wolves without looking at them.

The two largest Alpha wolves in the kingdom were tearing into each other three feet from his path. But he had walked through battlefields that made this look like a disagreement between puppies. His eyes were on the white wolf, and the white wolf alone.

Aegon snarled in his peripheral vision. Tiberon did not flinch, did not slow, did not acknowledge the sound, because acknowledging it would grant it significance and it had none.

He stopped in front of Aurelia.

The white wolf looked up at him with golden eyes that were wide and frightened and carrying the residual stress of a wolf who had been caged, licked, fought over, and abandoned in the span of fifteen minutes.

Tiberon held her gaze for one second. His voice carried no warmth, no softness, and no cruelty. It carried command.

"Shift."

One word. Alpha authority that predated both of the wolves behind him and outranked them by a generation.

White light erupted from Aurelia’s core.

The flash was blinding, forcing every person in the arena to shield their eyes or turn away. The light held for twelve seconds, which was too long, which confirmed the shift was still agonizing, which confirmed the training deficit was severe.

Behind him, both Alpha wolves collapsed.

The pain of Serena’s shift tore through both matebonds simultaneously, and the force of it broke both shifts at the same time.

Dexmon hit the arena floor on his hands and knees, gasping. Finnick Shadowclaw hit the ground three feet away in the same position, his breath coming in ragged bursts.

Tiberon turned and looked at them. Two Alpha Kings, both on all fours, both panting, both brought to the ground by the pain of a single wolf’s shift.

Fated matebonds were always more visceral than chosen when it came to shared pain. He had expected that. But he had not expected it to that degree. Noted.

Two giant problems solved with one command.

Beneficial currently. Detrimental to everyone if not corrected. Pain strong enough to break the shifts of two Alphas mid-fight. The tactical implications were immediate and severe. In a combat scenario, her pain would disable both of them simultaneously. In a siege, one well-placed strike on Serena would neutralize two of the most powerful wolves in the kingdom. Tiberon did not allow himself to dwell on that thought. He filed it, locked it, and kept walking.

The white flash was another addition to the growing catalogue of things about Serena Frostborne that defied precedent. Then again, he should have stopped being surprised by her months ago. Precedent and Serena had parted ways long before the dragon.

She was rewriting the rules by existing. Every month brought a new impossibility. A fated bond to two Alphas. A true-bonded dragon. A white wolf that radiated light. And the girl at the center of all of it was nineteen, underweight, and bleeding on the floor of his arena. Tiberon had spent forty years learning to anticipate every variable. Serena Frostborne was the variable he couldn’t solve, and he was running out of frameworks to put her in.

When the light cleared, Serena was on her hands and knees, panting. Her white hair hung around her face. Her body was trembling with the aftershock of a shift that had taken everything out of her.

She glanced over at Elara.

Elara: Your wolf looks exactly like your mother’s. The shift was interesting though. Good luck doing that in actual emergencies.

Serena: How did she do?

Elara: She took a nap, then ran away from your mates.

Serena: What do you mean?
