Chapter 402: Daddy Drakenfell Intended To Stay

The doors at the top of the arena opened.

Tiberon Drakenfell descended the steps with the unhurried authority of a man who had been commanding rooms since before the people in them were born. His eyes moved across the arena floor in a single sweep: Serena, blade in hand, breathing hard, hair plastered to her forehead. Thane and Calder, both carrying the posture of men who had been working and were satisfied with the work. Hale against the wall. Elara in the front row.

He gave Thane a nod. Gave Calder the same.

Both captains returned the nod and stepped back from the floor.

Serena’s grip tightened on the blade. Her red eyes widened by a fraction, the surprise visible before she could mask it, because King Tiberon Drakenfell walking into a secondary training arena and nodding her captains off the floor was a sequence of events she had failed to anticipate and was rapidly trying to interpret.

"Your Majesty, I—"

"I am taking over your training." Tiberon stopped at the edge of the floor. His voice was flat, declarative, carrying no apology and no preamble. "Dexmon and Finnick have been removed from all sessions. Their wolves cannot function in proximity to yours during a shift, and the matebond feedback is preventing you from training effectively. The problem is biological, it is predictable, and it is solved by removing them from the equation."

She blinked, surprised by the bluntness.

He stepped onto the floor.

"You cannot initiate a shift on your own. Your wolf cannot walk without shaking. Your shift takes twelve seconds, which is eight seconds too long for a combat scenario. You bleed from the nose after every transition, which indicates your body is absorbing the shift as trauma rather than processing it as a function. These are facts. They are fixable. They require time and repetition, and you have four days of the first and zero tolerance for excuses on the second."

Serena stood very still. The blade hung at her side. Her chin was level, but the tension in her jaw said she was bracing for the rest of it, for the part where the assessment became a verdict.

Tiberon looked at her.

The look shifted.

It was a small shift. Imperceptible to anyone who had known Tiberon Drakenfell for less than a decade. The posture remained rigid, the expression remained controlled, and the voice that followed carried the same commanding register. But the temperature changed by one degree, and the degree was the difference between a king addressing a soldier and a father addressing the woman his son loved.

"Serena. I have trained wolves for thirty years. I built the Drakenfell military from a regional force into the most disciplined army on the continent, and I did it by identifying what each wolf was and building a strategy around the wolf I had, rather than wishing for the wolf I wanted."

He clasped his hands behind his back.
