Chapter 464: Zero Pain? What The Shit.

25 MINUTES EARLIER

DRAKENFELL - TRAINING FIELD

Gavriel Sterling was walking down to the training field with Elara when he froze.

Full stop. Mid-stride. Both legs locked.

His pupils dilated. Wide.

His fist clenched. Hard. Every tendon in his forearm standing taut, knuckles compressing into a formation that had nothing to do with anger and everything to do with the specific, violent effort of keeping a reaction inside a body that wanted to let it out. Then unclenched. Slow. Deliberate. Finger by finger, like a man disarming himself manually.

Elara saw.

Her eyes followed his line of sight to Serena, standing in the center of the training field in her training suit, hair pulled back. The Beta Luna catalogued the freeze, the pupils, the fist, the unclenching, and filed all of it into a folder she had been building since the morning she found Serena on top of him with a bleeding hand and a glowing mark on his shoulder.

She waited.

Gavriel shook his head. Once. Twice. The shake was a reset, a physical override, his brain grabbing his body by the collar and dragging it back to the present tense where the present tense was a training field and his best friend’s mate was standing in the middle of it and his chest was doing the thing his chest had been doing since she walked into Drakenfell.

The thing his chest had been doing since he was ten years old in a different body with a different name on a different continent.

He continued walking. Casual. Easy. The Gavriel Sterling stride, the one that communicated zero concerns and maximum composure and hid everything underneath the way a frozen lake hides the current.

Elara didn’t question him. The questioning could wait. He was fresh out of a coma, processing gods-knew-what, and the freeze could have been shock, residual disorientation, low blood sugar, or the twelve other explanations that were less complicated than the one she suspected.

She let him walk. She walked beside him. Two people heading toward a training field carrying separate silences.

They found a position on the sideline. Gavriel stood with his arms crossed, his jaw set, his eyes fixed on the field with the quiet intensity of a man watching a woman he had very specific, very buried, very dangerous feelings about and whose feelings were locked in a vault whose combination was written in a language he would never speak out loud.

Tiberon entered the field. Dex and Fin arrived a minute later. Thor came out. The whole circus assembled.

Then Tiberon’s Alpha command cracked across the field.

"SHIFT."

White light detonated.

Elara winced. Preemptively. Her body flinched before the light even faded because she knew what was coming for Gavriel, or what she assumed was coming, because if Serena had marked him, and the mark was real, and the matebond was active, then the shift was about to send six seconds of bone-restructuring agony through the channel and Gavriel Sterling was about to fold.

She braced for the hunch. The gasp. The stagger. The nose bleed. All the things she had watched Dexmon and Finnick suffer through every single shift, the visible, brutal tax of a matebond transmitting a shift that was still closer to trauma than function.

The light faded. Aurelia stood in the center of the field, glowing, chin lifted, magnificent.

Gavriel was fine.

Nothing. Zero reaction. No flinch, no wince, no gasp, no blood. His eyes were locked on the white wolf with an intensity that could have burned through stone, and his entire body was rigid as a board, every muscle held in a tension so complete it looked architectural, but the rigidity was something else, the rigidity of a man containing something enormous behind a surface that was refusing to crack.
