Chapter 609: The Kingdom She Never Talked About

Finnick Shadowclaw didn’t remember going under.

One second he existed. The next, the world inverted, and on the other side was a life that wasn’t his.

The disorientation was total. He was standing, which was wrong, because the last thing his body remembered was horizontal, and the horizontal had been accompanied by exhaustion so complete that standing should have been a medical impossibility. His ribs ached. His shoulder throbbed. His hands were steady, which was the only thing about him that was, because his brain was scrambling through a fog so thick he couldn’t find the edges of it.

Where the hell was he?

The anger was still there. Sitting in his chest like an ember that refused to cool, positioned exactly where it had been since the ancestor chamber. The guilt was there too, uglier, heavier, pressed against the underside of the anger like a twin that shared a womb and hated the arrangement. He had told the woman he loved to get the fuck out. He had screamed at her in an office that smelled like whiskey and her tears, and the screaming had been the worst sound he’d ever made in any room, and the room still echoed with it every time his brain went quiet long enough to listen.

He didn’t know how he’d gotten from that to here. The gap between the last thing he remembered and this moment was a chasm, and the chasm was filled with nothing, and the nothing was unsettling in a way that made his skin itch.

Then the cold hit him.

It came from everywhere simultaneously. The kind of cold that predated weather and operated at the molecular level, the temperature of a kingdom built from ice by people who had decided warmth was a luxury and architecture was a religion. His breath crystallized in front of his face. The air tasted like mineral frost and ancient stone and something underneath both that was clean in a way modern air had forgotten how to be.

Finnick Shadowclaw looked up.

Frostborne.

He had never seen it. Every description he’d ever heard, every intelligence briefing, every diplomatic footnote referencing the fallen kingdom had painted a picture in his mind. The picture was wrong. The picture had been a crayon drawing of a cathedral.

The kingdom rose around him in layered terraces of crystalline ice, each level carved with a craftsmanship that made Shadowclaw’s stonework look like a rough draft.

Towers of translucent blue stretched toward a sky that was permanently overcast, their spires catching whatever light the clouds permitted and fracturing it into geometric patterns that danced across the streets below.

Bridges of ice connected buildings that shouldn’t have been structurally possible, arching across chasms with the confident engineering of a civilization that had solved problems Shadowclaw hadn’t invented yet.

It was gorgeous. It was the most beautiful kingdom Fin had ever stood in, and he had stood in every kingdom that mattered and several that didn’t.

People filled the streets. Wolves. Mages. Walking together, trading, arguing, laughing, the integrated chaos of a society that had figured out coexistence before the rest of the continent learned to spell it. The architecture reflected both bloodlines: mages and wolves, the two traditions woven so tightly that separating them would have required destroying both.

He understood, standing in it, why Serena never talked about this.
