Chapter 628: Love, Before It Had A Name

Lucian noticed things about River that nobody else noticed.

He noticed that she read the same scroll twice when the content upset her, the second reading a control mechanism, her brain demanding a re-run of the material so the emotional reaction could be managed and the managing was a system sheโ€™d built at six and refined at seven and perfected by nine.

He noticed that her appetite dropped on the anniversaries of things she never mentioned. That the quiet she carried on certain days was heavier than her normal quiet, and the heaviness had a calendar, and the calendar was invisible to everyone except a boy whose own calendar had the same kind of dates on it.

He noticed that she stood closer to Tristan in crowds and closer to Lucian in silence, and the distinction was instinctive rather than deliberate, the same way a person stands closer to fire when they want warmth and closer to stone when they want stability.

He was eleven when he realized that she came to him first with questions she was afraid to ask Tristan.

"Lucian, what happens to wolves when they die?" ๐™›๐“ป๐’†๐’†๐’˜๐™š๐“ซ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐’—๐™š๐“ต.๐™˜๐™ค๐™ข

"Why are you asking?"

"The scroll I read yesterday described a Fae funeral and it was about returning to the light. But wolves are mentioned separately and the text was unclear."

"The text was unclear because Fae scholars do not understand wolf spirituality well enough to describe it accurately." He paused. "I do not either. The priestess might."

"I do not want to ask the priestess. She speaks in prophecy when I want her to speak in answers."

"What answer are you looking for?"

She was quiet for a long time. The kind of quiet that belonged to a girl whose question had a question underneath it and the underneath was the real one.

"Whether the people who die stay somewhere. Or whether they are gone."

The underneath.

"I think," Lucian said carefully, "that the people who matter to us never fully leave. I think they live in the part of us that remembers them, and the remembering is a form of existence that does not require a body."

"That sounds like something you tell a child to make them feel better."

"It is something I tell myself. If it also makes you feel better, that is a secondary benefit."

She looked at him with the particular expression she reserved for moments when Lucian said something that landed in her chest and stayed there. The expression had no name and required no translation.

He noticed that she flinched at loud sounds that came from behind her. That she positioned herself with her back to walls in rooms where the occupants changed. That she calculated exits before she calculated anything else, the habit heโ€™d reinforced by showing her the hidden passages and the habit that had predated his teaching by years because the habit had been installed by a kingdom whose lessons were delivered in chains.

He noticed all of it. He carried all of it. He never mentioned any of it, because mentioning would have required her to acknowledge the carrying and the acknowledging would have required her to be vulnerable about the things she was flinching from, and Lucian Moon was never going to force vulnerability onto a girl whose vulnerability had been weaponized against her before she was old enough to know the word.

He was twelve when he found her crying in the garden.

She was behind the wall where Tristan would later teach her to climb, curled into a space between the stone and the hedgerow, knees pulled up, face buried, shoulders shaking with the specific tremor of a child who was trying to cry quietly and failing because her body had more grief than her technique could contain.

He sat beside her.
