The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate novel Chapter 636

Chapter 636: Your Flag Looks Temporary

He was the Alpha King. The position was never contested. It was never discussed. Every wolf who arrived looked at Lucian Moon and understood, in the place where wolves understand things, that this man was the center and the rest of them were the circumference.

Fin watched his first life build a species from scratch and the watching was a mirror held up to every decision he’d made in this life.

The same instinct. The same gathering. The same you are welcome here and the here is permanent. Shadowclaw had been founded on the principle that the rejected had a home and the home had a king who would never let them forget it.

That was something his father taught him as a boy and something Fin made sure to continue as an Alpha King now.

The memory faded into something else.

ARGENVAEL

The kingdom was a corpse.

Argenvael had been dead for seventeen years. The territory that Lucian’s parents had held, the eastern border they had defended, the Silver Province with its mineral rivers and its forests that looked like they’d been cast from silver, all of it had been absorbed, divided, parceled out among four Fae houses whose investment in the land amounted to a flag on a building and a tax collector who visited quarterly.

Nobody lived there who wanted to.

The garrison was a joke. Forty Fae soldiers were stationed in a crumbling outpost whose commanding officer had been assigned the post as a punishment for something he’d done at court that nobody would specify. The soldiers rotated every six months because nobody lasted longer than six months in a territory whose primary exports were mineral dust and despair. The posting was where careers went to die, and the careers knew it.

Lucian arrived at dawn.

A hundred wolves crested the ridge above the eastern gate of Argenvael, and the cresting was the most beautiful goddamn thing Fin had ever seen in a memory that wasn’t his.

They moved in formation. Real formation. The kind that said we have trained together and we trust the man at the front and the man at the front has decided what is happening and what is happening is this. Dark-furred, silver-furred, red-furred, amber-furred, a spectrum of wolves whose only commonality was gold eyes and the absolute, bone-deep certainty that they were exactly where they were supposed to be.

There was no second wave. No reinforcement. No fallback. If the gate didn’t open, if the garrison fought, if Vaeryn responded with force, Lucian would lose all of them. Every wolf who believed him, every wolf who followed him, every wolf who had looked at a man with a legal claim and a dead kingdom and said I’m in. Every name would become a headstone he’d carry for the rest of his life.

The garrison saw a hundred wolves on a ridge at dawn being led by a man who was walking toward them with the unhurried stride of a person returning to a house he owned, and the garrison’s collective reaction could be summarized as oh no.
