Chapter 655: Out Of Sight, Never Out Of Mind

Lucian’s vision narrowed. "Vesper?"

One name. That made his wolf growl. Instant cockroach-won’t-die reaction. Tristan either didn’t notice the growl or was too tired to care.

"The healers won’t confirm the source yet. But the signature matches blood magic." Tristan pushed off the wall. "The Willow bitch is using forbidden magic on my wife from inside a dungeon cell, and the council approved her sitting there because nobody wants to deal with the politics of what happens when you tell a General’s daughter to go to hell."

Through the matebond, River’s unease pulsed. She was asleep, or unconscious, or somewhere between, and the signal was faint and jumbled, carrying the texture of a mind fighting something in the dark.

Lucian kept his face composed. His chest was doing something his face was refusing to acknowledge.

"What are you going to do about it?"

Tristan’s green eyes went flat. The particular flat that preceded decisions that couldn’t be undone.

"I’m going to the council this morning. The Covenant of Lorathis permits severing a fated tie when it was established under duress or coercion. Blood magic on my wife qualifies. I’ve pulled testimony from three healers, precedent from the Third Scroll of Sacred Bonds, and a ruling from the Aelindris High Court, year 412 of the Second Age." He paused. "I’m going to walk into that chamber with more research than nine elders and a priestess combined, and I’m going to walk out with a severing ceremony on the calendar."

"When did you sleep?"

"I didn’t. Sleep is for men whose wives aren’t being hexed by a psychopath woman." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"You’re terrifying when you’re motivated."

"I’m terrifying when I’m rested. Right now I’m something worse. I’m thorough."

Lucian studied his best friend’s face. The preparation was Atlas-grade. The fury was pure Tristan. The combination was a machine designed to produce a single outcome, and the machine had been running all night.

"Good."

The word came out of Lucian carrying more weight than a single syllable should hold. Because good meant sever the fated tie with Vesper, and good meant free yourself from the woman the Goddess assigned, and good also meant, in a place Lucian would never visit out loud, the mechanism that controls fated ties can be broken, which means the mechanism that controls mine exists in a system that has exceptions.

He didn’t examine that thought. He threw a tarp over it.

They clasped hands. The grip was firm, the specific handshake of two men who had been through enough together that affection expressed itself through pressure rather than words. Lucian clapped him on the shoulder. "I’ve got a border patrol that’s been waiting since the ceremony. I’ll be back to check on things."

"You don’t have to keep riding back, Lucian. Your kingdom needs you north."

"My kingdom has twelve competent generals and a functioning chain of command."

"And yet their king keeps leaving."

"I’m delegating. My kingdom is fine. You are the one with a woman using blood magic on your wife from inside a dungeon." He held Tristan’s eyes. "I’ll be back."

Tristan’s mouth curved because his best friend would be checking on a situation that didn’t require his presence and had never once thought to do otherwise. Because that was the kind of man Lucian Moon was.
