117 - Ben
A wall of fur is coming at us. How does she even have this many wolves in her control? We brace for the impact. This is going to be the fight of our lives. I can feel the tension increase in the air around us. Then several things happen at once.
The world around us slows. The wolves charging at us are still running, claws destroying the dirt under their feet, mouths wide open in ugly snarls, but it’s as if someone hit the slow-mo button. I look to Jax on my left and Jason on my right to make sure I haven’t gone completely crazy; or more likely under some kind of spell. Copyright ©️ 2025 Miss L Writes and Ember Mantel Productions
“You’re seeing what I’m seeing right?” Jax asks.
Yeah. But, are they under a spell or are we?” I say, not taking my eyes off the hoard coming toward us.
“And who cast the spell?” Dev adds.
“They did.” Jason whispers, but he’s looking behind us. I risk a look and the wall of the Rift has gone a more opaque gold color and it’s humming.
That’s the magic I feel. Elara and Juliette are locked in battle with Eliza. My heart sinks, I should be in there with her. What am I supposed to do with this situation? I’m struck in the check, an invisible force literally hits me, and I have my answer.
I take a breath and turn back to my friends. “Capture them.”
“What?!”
I stumble forward. The magic just hit me in the head. ‘As*hole.’ I grumble in my mind. Only because it makes me feel better, I keep muttering at the Rift in my thoughts. ‘Well, if you aren’t going to help us then you get no say in how we contain them, and that means some of them are going to die. They are here to die, for Eliza. She doesn’t care about them.’ I don’t want riddles, I want solutions. I’m sure most of the wolves here are innocent, but if I can’t stop them, without hurting them, death is the only option. My mate, our friends and their mates, our pack. They are my only priority.
Another flash of blue light has our attention drawn to the Rift. There are vines and thorns shooting out of the ground with magic cracking around them like lightning.
“Let’s get this done. Maybe it will let us in to help them.” I look at Jason and he nods.
“Alright, so – capture, not kill… with no obvious way to contain them. Got it.” Jax laughs, running forward. We all follow. He reaches out to grab the nearest wolf and is thrown back into us. We all go toppling down.
“What the f*ck?!” Dev scrambles out of our heap of bodies to check on his mate. Jax’s head lolls to the side, eyes closed. Jason and I stand to defend them. I can hear Dev muttering what sounds like a mix of curses and promises. He’s alive though. I can feel his life force. That’s new.
