The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 122

Chapter 122

The Goodmans had spent the past few days digging up wild arrowroot. Victor even built a crude grinder that could mash the chopped roots into pulp, then wash and strain it into powder. By their estimate, they could process over 100 pounds of it.

If the world hadn’t gone to hell, it would’ve been a great product.

But right now, staying full mattered more than anything. Arrowroot was good for skin and was rich in nutrition, but it didn’t keep hunger away for long.

The Goodmans wanted Nicole’s group to help them trade it for real food.

Nicole thought it over. “What kind of trade are you thinking about?”

“One pound for one pound,” Gabrielle replied. “Does that sound fair?”

She didn’t give a direct answer. “I’ll ask around.”

Gabrielle didn’t sound confident. “If that doesn’t work…broken rice is fine too.”

So they knew.

If the roles were reversed, they probably wouldn’t trade fresh rice for arrowroot flour. In a situation like this, only people with extra supplies and no immediate food worries would even consider it.

After finishing Gabrielle’s needle therapy, Nicole went back to her place and mixed up some arrowroot flour with water.

The taste was faintly sweet, a little bitter, with a lingering earthy note. It was nothing special flavor-wise, but it had its uses. It could cool the body, help with hydration, support digestion, calm the nerves, even ease a hangover.

In times like this, that still counted as valuable.

Nicole didn’t keep all three pounds to herself. Instead, she split it between Zeph and Hughie’s group, and mentioned the Goodmans’ plan to trade for food.

Neither group seemed interested.

Jeremy still couldn’t get over the fish they had lost from the reservoir. “Such a waste. Weasel came back asking for more, wanting another 2,000 pounds in one go.”

Hughie sighed. “They must’ve had a way to sell it to rich clients. Who else would order that much at once? When they heard we were out, you should’ve seen their faces. They kept telling us to contact them the second we got more.”

The next day, Nicole told Gabrielle the deal had gone through. They would trade for broken rice, but the quality had to be solid.

She decided to take the batch herself. As things got worse, people’s health would decline. Something

like arrowroot might actually come in handy.

Gabrielle was overjoyed.

A few days later, the Goodmans had 100 pounds of arrowroot flour ready. They also set aside an extra 5 pounds for Nicole as a thank-you.

Derek and Victor carried the sacks out to a quiet corner beyond the complex to wait.

Nicole paddled over in an inflatable raft, loaded the arrowroot flour onboard, and took Cola out for a walk

while she was at it.

Once she reached a secluded spot, she stored the arrowroot away and swapped it for an equal weight of broken rice. After letting Cola run around for a bit, she headed back.

Derek and Victor were still waiting. When they saw the rice, their faces lit up.

After a nap, Nicole noticed the rain had eased significantly.

Instead of feeling relieved, she frowned deeper. The deep freeze might be coming next.

By evening, the rain had thinned to a drizzle. The sky even seemed brighter.

For over three months, people had been trapped in this relentless flood. Countless lives had been lost. Now, finally, it looked like the skies might clear.

Outside, some people cheered, while others broke down crying. Everyone, without exception, just wanted this nightmare to end.
