Chapter 129
Nicole had slept too much during the day, so that night, she was wide awake, going through everything in her storage space again.
The peppers, eggplants, and cucumbers in the garden had already been harvested. The old grapevine had grown thick clusters, the fruit shifting from green to a deep reddish-purple.
Another month or so, and they would be ready.
The first year had only produced ten clusters in total. Once they ripened, she would harvest maybe 50 pounds at most.
On a whim, and not wanting to step inside her storage and waste time, she tried reaching out with her
mind.
She didn’t expect anything. She had never managed to pull something directly from the soil before.
But the next second, a grape appeared in her hand.
Nicole froze. Then, the excitement hit.
She immediately tried again, this time pulling at some leafy greens.
It worked! She managed to yank out a few bunches.
Still, the effort drained her fast. Her head spun, her vision blurring.
If she could harvest with her mind, could she till the soil, too?
After the dizziness passed, Nicole focused again, guiding a hoe through the dirt with her thoughts.
Her mind felt heavy, but the soil turned. It worked, but only for a dozen motions before she had to stop.
It was strange. She had tried this before and gotten nothing.
So why now?
Had her constant training strengthened more than just her body?
Nicole felt like she had just discovered a whole new world. If even her mental focus could be trained like this, she could save time and fully make use of the black soil garden.
Corn, peanuts, sweet potatoes, potatoes, soybeans, mung beans… Anything that could grow, she planted
Nicole kept practicing. By late at night, she had managed to turn over 50 square feet of soil. Completely drained, she collapsed onto the bed.
Cola sensed something was off and nudged closer, sniffing her from head to toe before whining.
He felt uneasy, wondering what was wrong with his human.

Nicole shared her excitement with him. “Cola, we can stock up on even more food now. Aren’t you happy?
“Woof!” He spun in circles on the spot, excited.
The next morning, Nicole stayed in bed again, using her mind to keep working the soil until she was utterly exhausted before finally getting up for breakfast.
When she pulled back the curtains, she froze. It was snowing outside.
Where she lived, snow was something you would only see in a disaster.
It wasn’t heavy, just fine flakes drifting down. It was easy to miss if you weren’t looking closely.
Nicole frowned. In her past life, it had only been a deep freeze. Now it was snowing, too?
Things really were different.
The cold alone was already deadly. Was a snowstorm coming next?
The flood had already reached the sixth floor. If a snow disaster followed, would they have to keep building higher? Was this city going to be buried alive?
The thought was chilling.
Nicole had just finished breakfast when someone knocked on the door. Hughie’s group had called a meeting, this time about something critical: water.
They had barely recovered from yesterday. They spent the whole day holed up inside, burning whatever they could to stay warm.
Today was even colder, though at least they could breathe a little easier.
Jeremy and Hughie were bundled up like balls, still shivering nonstop. “The water tower’s frozen. What are we supposed to do for water?”
Nicole had water in her storage space, so she wasn’t worried. 1
She couldn’t say that, though. She had to look just as troubled. “Yeah… What do we do?”
Jeremy scratched at himself. “I didn’t shower yesterday. I feel disgusting.”
It was a habit built over the years. Skipping even a day made him feel unclean.
Nicole quickly chimed in, “Same. My scalp’s already itchy.”
