Chapter 151
Wh-what kind of monster was Nicole?
“My dog’s picky. He only eats legs, and they’ve got to be fresh.”
Cola dropped into an attack stance, chest muscles bunching tight, lips peeled back as killing intent
radiated off him.
He barked, as if saying, “That’s right. I like legs only, the kind that’s fresh and bleeding. Got a problem?
Come try me!”
The group froze. This vicious dog was raised on human flesh?
Some of the more timid ones couldn’t stop their legs from shaking.
Just as the standoff stretched tight, three men walked past them, knives in hand, heading straight for the woman. The tallest one held the hand of a little girl.
The others were impressed.
Damn, these guys had guts, going after someone like her.
Fine. Let them fight. If both sides got hurt, there would be scraps to pick up after.
But reality hit differently.
Instead of attacking, the leg-eating dog wagged his tail at them.
The three men turned and stood shoulder to shoulder beside the woman, their cold eyes sweeping over
the crowd.
Yeah… Never mind.
Any lingering thoughts disappeared as they scattered immediately.
Poppy hugged Cola, looking a little hurt. “Cola, you didn’t wait for me.”
Cola nudged her gently in response.
Watching Nicole cut bamboo, Derek frowned. “Bamboo’s hollow. It doesn’t burn well. You should be cutting trees.”
“I’m not strong enough to haul logs. Bamboo’s fine. Besides, it doesn’t burn well, so no one bothers stealing it.”
Derek listened, feeling like it made sense, but also like something was off.
Splitting up to cut trees was risky, so Derek and Victor stayed near the bamboo grove. That way, they could cover each other if something happened.
With only one steel saw, Zeph had to use a machete.

Bamboo was hollow. A few clean strikes, and it came down, much faster than sawing. He moved efficiently, chopping off branches in quick motions, finishing a stalk in no time.
It was a complete gap in strength, not something Nicole could compete with. She stuck to her slow, steady pace.
As more people climbed the mountain, the number of hostile stares grew.
A well-fed dog, a steel saw, and a cute little girl drew attention like magnets. Some people stared openly, while others lurked, waiting for a chance.
Cola’s instincts kicked in, locking onto every dangerous gaze. He bared his teeth, lips curled, body coiled tight, ready to explode into action at any second.
Poppy wasn’t about to be useless. She copied him, trying to look fierce.
Mean. She had to look mean. Zeph had said as long as she looked scarier than everyone else, no one
would mess with her.
So she bared her teeth just like Cola.
The imitation was…not great.
Cola looked down at her in disdain. She didn’t even get the basics right.
Head up, back straight, core tight, and bare your teeth, show them properly. That was what fierce looked
like. 1
What she was doing, though, only made her look soft, the kind of cute that would get her eaten alive.
Even with Cola trying to demonstrate, Poppy’s cheeks started to hurt from forcing the expression.
In the end, she gave up.
She reached into her backpack and pulled out a large kitchen knife.
The kind of blade that could hack its way through anything.
