Chapter 156
Hearing his description, Nicole figured it wasn’t too serious and asked out of habit, “Have you eaten?”
“Not yet. Poppy’s making something.”
Poppy, cooking breakfast? She couldn’t even reach the stove.
“She’s got to learn sooner or later.”
True. Kids in this world didn’t get the luxury of being delicate. Not if they wanted to survive.
“Ah!”
A sharp cry came through the walkie-talkie.
Nicole frowned. “What happened?”
Did she get splashed with hot oil like Zeph did?
No response came from the other side.
Thinking about how his injury was because of her, and how that pushed Poppy to try cooking, Nicole headed out and went to Zeph’s apartment. “Poppy?”
She knocked a few times before the door opened.
Poppy was fine. She had insisted on taking care of Zeph after seeing him hurt, starting with breakfast.
But she couldn’t reach the stove, so she dragged over a short stool to stand on.
She lost her balance and fell, but thanks to all the training Zeph put her through, her reflexes kicked in. She adjusted mid-fall and didn’t hurt herself.
Still, her mood had tanked. She stood there picking at her fingers, her eyes glassy. “Nicole, am I useless? I can’t even make breakfast.”
She looked like she might burst into tears any second.
“You’re not,” Nicole said, rubbing her head gently. “You’re five and already trying to cook. That’s amazing. Your brother only figured it out recently.”
Zeph, suddenly dragged into this, fell silent.
Then he backed her up. “Yeah. You’re way better than me, Poppy.”
Since this whole thing started because of her, Nicole felt a little guilty. “What do you wanna eat? I’ll show you.”
“Ravioli,” Poppy said, brightening. “Zeph wants ravioli.”
So Poppy climbed back onto the stool, and Nicole stayed beside her, guiding her step by step.

Cola stood up with his front paws on the counter, watching intently. He wanted in on this, too.
If this wasn’t the end of the world, Nicole would’ve sent him to college. The dog might’ve come back with a degree.
As it turned out, Poppy picked things up fast. She handled boiling water, rinsing bowls, wiping the
counter, all of it.
Nicole didn’t feel relieved. If anything, her brows tightened.
Zeph drove a Hummer. There was no way his family had been poor. Yet Poppy knew how to do all this
housework.
It didn’t take much guessing to figure it out. His uncle’s family must’ve pushed her into it.
Thinking about Zeph’s cold, quiet nature, Nicole couldn’t help wondering what had happened to that uncle’s family in the end.
But that was his business. She wasn’t about to ask.
The two girls and the dog stayed busy in the kitchen, while Zeph leaned against the doorway.
Even he didn’t seem to notice the faint curve at the corner of his lips.
No denying it, Poppy had way more talent in the kitchen than he did. The ravioli came out fully cooked, not a single one torn open.
