Seeing the look on Nicole’s face, Zeph tried to reassure her. “You don’t need to worry. Cola’s smart. Dogs are the most loyal partners humans have. I don’t think he’ll lose himself.”
Nicole wasn’t so sure. The deep freeze would last a full year, and when Cola died saving her last time, it had only been three months in.
Back then, all he wanted was to protect her. Even as they beat him to death, he never let go…
The memory was too brutal. Nicole shoved it away and pulled Cola tight into her arms. This time, she would be the one protecting him.
Sensing her emotions shift, the dog pressed into her, tail low as he wondered what was wrong with his
human.
“I’ll train him properly,” Zeph said.
Train him properly? Cola ground his teeth. Hadn’t he already graduated?
Zeph rubbed his head. “Training never ends. As long as we’re alive, we keep improving.”
Cola tilted his mouth, unimpressed. Yeah, right.
Back home, Nicole measured his height and weight, recording every detail. Not just him. She checked
Ash and Snowy, too.
After running her hands over them a few times, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something had changed. They seemed bolder now, too.
Over the next few days, they made more than 2,000 bamboo arrows, and everyone’s crossbow skills
improved.
The hallway wasn’t enough distance anymore, so they moved up to the rooftop to push their limits.
At -40 degrees, they bundled up like bears and kept grinding.
Everyone wanted to take it easy, but no one dared. They all knew if they stopped, they might never get back up.
But it was brutally cold. Their hands shook like they had Parkinson’s.
Jeremy stared at Nicole, steady as ever, and felt his whole worldview crack. “Nicole, how are you doing that?”
She wasn’t even dressed as heavily as he was, but she barely seemed cold. It made no sense.
Nicole shot him a look. “I’m not sickly, and I’m not weak. And I’ve got a heart that runs hot.”
Hughie, being called “sickly,” went silent. 3

Unbelievable. Even in the apocalypse, she had to take a jab at him. What did he ever do to deserve this?
And who said he was weak? Beatrice said he had been doing great lately.
Once the gap became obvious, they stopped resisting it. Besides, Nicole had Zeph coaching her. Of course, she was getting stronger by the day.
It felt like she was on another level now. Her fighting skills were climbing fast, and her stamina was improving just as quickly.
Anyone with common sense knew how brutal this weather was. The damp cold crept straight into your bones, like it was freezing your soul solid.
They looked at her, then at Zeph…
Yeah. He wore even less than they did. His physical conditioning was ridiculous.
There was no point in comparing. They figured they should just focus on getting better at shooting.
After a few days of rest, Zeph asked for a sparring session.
Nicole frowned. “Your arm’s not fully healed.”
