Chapter 175

Hughie let out a short laugh. “It’s the family in 1702. Yesterday, they wouldn’t open the door no matter what. Today, out of nowhere, they suddenly packed up and left.”
Nicole didn’t think much of it. “They’re probably scared that those people would come back for revenge and drag them into it.”
“Good riddance,” Hughie said. “One less person waiting to stab us in the back.”
He lowered his voice and added, “I just heard Gabrielle talking to them. Sounds like they’re moving to a
shelter.”
That made sense. With the unprecedented cold sweeping through the south, the government had reorganized shelters. Homes in the coastal regions weren’t built with central heating. Most people relied on basic methods to stay warm.
The shelters were packed. People were crammed shoulder to shoulder, their body heat keeping things barely tolerable. But the air was thick, and the space was cramped. You could barely move, let alone lie down or get something like a hot shower.
Go too long without sleep, and you’d break down. If you fell asleep, though, there was a good chance you’d wake up with nothing left on you.
Resources were stretched thin. With so many people in the city, shelters could only provide short-term relief. Anyone admitted was allowed to stay for one month.
After that, they had to move to public warming areas, which only had heat during the day. At night, the heat shut off, and people could freeze where they stood.
That was why many preferred to collect relief supplies and head into the hills for firewood instead of going to shelters. At least at home, they had blankets. With a fire going, they could still get some sleep.
Hughie looked at Nicole. “Now that it’s just the Goodmans on the 17th floor, what do we do?”
“We already made things clear before they moved in.” Nicole’s expression stayed neutral. “Nowhere’s safe. It’s up to them to figure out how to survive. They shouldn’t expect us to carry them.”
The 18th floor wasn’t made of heroes. They didn’t even know how long they themselves would last.
While they were talking, Zeph stepped out. “Nicole, heading out to scout today?”
Zeph wasn’t from Westbridge and didn’t even know where Liora Estates was. Nicole wanted another look anyway, so she nodded.
Scouting meant staying low-key. Nicole changed into worn clothes. Zeph tried to do the same, but…
There was only so much he could hide. He was too tall, his build too sharp. Those long legs stood out no
matter what he wore.

Nicole glanced at him. “How tall are you?”
“Six two.”
That height would stand out anywhere, especially here.
Nicole hesitated. “Maybe I should go alone.”
Zeph’s mouth twitched slightly. “I won’t slow you down.”
At that point, there wasn’t much she could say. He was skilled enough to handle himself even if things
went wrong.
So they left Cola and Poppy with Hughie’s group.
The reputation had already spread. Even with both of them dressed down, people still recognized them.
No one dared get close.
News of yesterday’s fight had spread fast.
