Chapter 19

The

past few days had been chaos.

During the daytime alone, several groups had come knocking at the stairwell door, asking to borrow food. They said their kids were so hungry that they could barely stand.

They had been trapped for ten days. They had no water, power, or gas. Almost nobody had any food left.

Even if someone did, give to one family and not another, and the starving, red-eyed crowd would tear you apart.

Nicole pulled a heavy butcher knife from the storage space and slipped on night-vision goggles. She moved quietly, opened the inner door, then shoved the outer door open in one swift motion.

Someone outside was prying at the lock, never expecting the door to burst open.

The man holding the single hook barely had time to react before his mouth was clamped shut. A sudden, searing pain tore through his abdomen.

Nicole stabbed again and again, then shoved him aside and lunged toward the second person.

A flashlight beam swept over. Seeing the knife dripping with blood in her hand, the man froze, then turned to run.

Nicole swept his legs, grabbed his collar, and slammed him to the ground.

There were four of them in total. The other two spun and bolted. One of them slammed straight into a tall shadow.

There wasn’t even time to scream. With a sharp crack, his neck was twisted the wrong way. Before his body could hit the floor, it was hauled up and thrown out the window.

Nicole looked up toward the sound.

A tall figure stood there, efficient and ruthless, killing and disposing of bodies without hesitation.

At the same time, Nicole slashed the second man’s throat. He clutched his neck, mouth opening and closing, but no sound came out as his body thrashed helplessly.

Rumors had spread through the building that 1802 had plenty of food, and a pretty girl was living there alone.

They had come for supplies, and for her. They heard it was a college girl with soft, supple skin; easy prey.

None of them expected that such a delicate-looking woman would be a monster.

Nicole yanked off the man’s mask.

It was him. The one who, in her last life, moved into 1803 and later tried to pry her door open more than once.

That was human nature. Even given another chance, he had still chosen to do evil.

Nicole sneered and drove the blade straight into his heart.

She stood up, knife still in hand, eyes locked on the man not far away. In the dim light, the silhouette looked familiar.

It was Zeph.

Zeph walked over, grabbed the lifeless body, dragged it to the window, and tossed it out.

Seeing Nicole frozen in place, tense and rigid, he said quietly, “You did nothing wrong. Leaving people like that

alive only brings more harm.”

Was he comforting her?

He didn’t seem surprised by what had happened at all, the killing and disposing of bodies. His deep eyes never flickered.

Nicole had wondered about his background. His posture and presence suggested military or law enforcement. Now, he felt more like a cold-blooded executioner.

Whoever he was, he wasn’t a threat to her. At least, not for now. He had even helped.

Nicole nodded. She agreed. If they had let those men go, who knew how many others would suffer?

She wiped the blood from her face, then used a mop and rags to clean the hallway. Meanwhile, Zeph repaired the damaged stairwell lock through the night.

Neither of them spoke. When it was done, they returned to their own apartments.

Nicole went into the storage space. She showered, soaked her bloodstained clothes, and washed them clean.

She had seen worse.

Lying in bed, she felt calm. Sleep came quickly.

The next morning, the water level had risen again.
