Chapter 204

The man moved fast. He snatched the bag of rice and stuffed it deep inside his thick coat, as if he was afraid someone might spot it and cause trouble.

After handing the items to Nicole, he explained how to use the deworming medicine while packing up his stall, clearly getting ready to head home.

As he left, Nicole noticed Zeph standing a short distance away. Poppy was picking out hair ties, and he held her hand, glancing over at Nicole every now and then.

“Nicole,” Poppy said, torn between choices, “which one looks better?”

The colors Zeph picked were…not great. They didn’t look nice on her at all.

Kids liked bright colors. Red, pink, orange, blue.

But Zeph had chosen black, white, gray…

Yeah, no wonder Poppy wasn’t into them.

Nicole lowered her head and started helping Poppy choose.

Just then, the vendor, quick on his feet, noticed the way the man stood protectively behind the woman. and got an idea. He leaned in and asked quietly, “Miss, want some rubber?”

Rubber…?

Nicole blinked, confused, not catching on right away.

The vendor slipped one out of his pocket with a mysterious air and gave it a quick shake in front of her.” Top quality. Guaranteed.”

Oh. Damn. That kind of rubber.

Where did he get the idea she needed that?

“Times are tough,” the vendor went on, eager to sell. “You two are already raising a kid. That’s hard enough. If you get pregnant again, it could be deadly. Forget whether the baby survives. You might not

even make it.”

He kept talking, trying to close the deal.

“Miss, take a few home. You can reuse them. Totally worth it!”

Nicole was so embarrassed that her toes curled in her shoes, but then she remembered the 3,000 condoms sitting in her storage space. She didn’t need them anyway, and with her face completely covered except for her eyes, it wasn’t like anyone would recognize her.

Curious despite herself, she asked, “How much?”

Her attention drifted completely, and she seemed to forget Zeph was standing right behind her.

The vendor held up one finger. “Five pounds of premium rice or flour.”

Five pounds of grain for one?

…Wait. She could get rich off this.

Of course, she wasn’t about to sell now. Everyone here was just trying to survive. It wouldn’t be easy to find buyers. Later, when supplies ran low, she could trade with people who had real wealth, such as gold, gemstones, and antiques, or swap for things she didn’t already have.

Seeing her frown, the vendor thought she found it too expensive and immediately turned on the charm.

“Miss, you don’t look like you’re hurting for food, but you can’t neglect a little entertainment. This is brand new, unopened. It costs me four and a half pounds of grain just to get it. I can’t sell at a loss, right? If you think it’s pricey, I’ve got secondhand ones, too. Just two pounds of grain. I swear by its durability. You can even check the quality on the spot. Oh, and what size do you need?”

Secondhand? 1

Nicole felt like she had been struck by lightning. Her stomach churned.

The vendor, completely oblivious, glanced at Zeph. “What size are you?”
