Knowing Nicole wasn’t an ordinary buyer, Weasel chose his words carefully. “We slaughtered it this morning. I’ve got 200 pounds, bone and hide included.”

Their boss had traded a good amount of supplies through back channels to get it. It had only just hit the market today, and not a single pound had been sold.

Just like she said, the rich didn’t lack meat, and the poor couldn’t afford it. Finding the right buyers wasn’t easy. Even when someone did show interest, it was half a pound here, one pound there. Selling it

all would take forever.

Two hundred pounds sounded like a lot, but with the bones and hide included, the actual meat probably didn’t exceed a hundred and twenty.

Still, chances like this didn’t come often. The longer things went on, the harder it would be to get any

meat at all.

Nicole didn’t hesitate. “I want cuts from the legs up. Full 200 pounds.”

Weasel nodded, then hesitated. “Wait here. I need to check with my boss.”

Better safe than getting beaten later.

He hurried off, and about 20 minutes later, came back with another man. The newcomer was wrapped up tightly, only his eyes visible.

The deal was approved, but they wanted to inspect Nicole’s goods.

Nicole reached into her pocket, pulling out a condom from her storage space.

It was one of the compact sizes.

Samson Armstrong probably moonlighted as a part-time online seller, carrying every size you could think of, but… Any decent salesperson starts by offloading the stuff that doesn’t sell.

The man inspected it without opening the packaging, checking the print and the seal. “It’s legit.”

Two hundred pounds of beef for two hundred condoms. But no one carried that much on them, and even

if Weasel was willing, Nicole couldn’t haul two hundred pounds of meat in one go.

For safety, they agreed to split the deal into multiple exchanges, 50 pounds at a time.

They set a meeting point across from the north entrance of the department store and went their

separate ways to prepare.

Nicole stayed alert on the way, scanning her surroundings. No one seemed to be following her. Only when the time felt right did she head to the agreed location.

Weasel arrived shortly after, carrying a black bag.

Nicole checked carefully. The frozen meat was a deep red, fresh, with no off smell. She weighed it in her hands, then pulled out a spring scale from her bag.

Weasel and his companion exchanged looks. She really didn’t miss a thing. Luckily, they hadn’t tried anything.

Once the weight checked out, Nicole handed over the matching number of condoms.

The man inspecting them frowned. “Why are they all the small kind?”

Nicole met his gaze. “Is that a problem?”

Weasel stepped in with a grin. “As long as they’re real, it’s fine. You don’t know these rich folks. They make a lot, sure, but they’re not exactly impressive where it counts.”

Nicole said nothing. That didn’t seem like something she needed to know.

The exchange went smoothly. She packed the meat into her large backpack, then found a quiet spot and stored it away in her storage space.

Over the next two hours, they completed four rounds of trade. She was one step closer to having more than enough beef.

By the time they parted, Weasel was convinced she was in the same line of work. There was a hint of respect in his tone.

“Next time you’ve got something good, come find me.”

“You, too.”

Since they were already familiar, Nicole asked, “Got any fresh vegetables?”

“Frozen ones,” Weasel said. “Crazy expensive. About the same as meat.”

“What kind?”

“Potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, carrots.”

He didn’t deal with those himself. If she wanted them, she would have to go through others. By then, the

price would be even worse.

After getting a sense of the market, Nicole headed back.

As she neared her building, she took out three bags of frozen potatoes from her storage space, each about five pounds. She also froze some carrots, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes, and cut out two pounds of beef.

When the three households pooled their supplies together, it would already count as a decent Christmas compared to everyone else. 1

On the 17th floor, she ran into Gabrielle. Since Nicole had extra decorations, she gave her a set. Gabrielle
