Nicole drove a kick straight into the man, sending him tumbling down the stairs. He slammed hard onto the landing below and couldn’t get back up.
Expressionless, she walked down step by step and planted her foot on his throat for a very long time before finally letting go.
Then she left the office building and headed to the meeting spot.
Zeph was already waiting there. “You took care of it?”
Nicole nodded. “Yup. What about you?”
“Yeah. No loose ends.”
They had already traded for everything they needed. Unless something unexpected happened, they probably wouldn’t be going outside again before the extreme heat arrived.
By the time Jeremy and the others returned for the break, the temperature had already climbed past -40 degrees.
Seeing several water tanks piled throughout the hallway, the three of them froze in shock.
“Nicole, don’t we already have enough water tanks?”
They had nearly died dragging seven tanks onto the rooftop before, only for the deep freeze to hit days later and burst all the pipes.
Now, Nicole had somehow gotten even more. The hallway was packed with them, and several more sat
on the stairs.
Was she collecting junk now?
Hughie and Beatrice still looked confused, but Jeremy caught on immediately. “Nicole, are we stocking
up on water?”
“Exactly. Getting these wasn’t easy, either. I was waiting for you guys to come back and install them.”
At least people still had a chance to prepare. The temperature had already risen this much. If survivors still couldn’t see what was coming, then nobody could save them.
Nicole had simply moved faster than everyone else.
People outside had already started discussing whether the deep freeze was ending. Some were busy celebrating, while others with connections had quietly begun stockpiling supplies.
Gabrielle had come upstairs two days ago and warned her that there was at least a 70% chance the next disaster would be extreme heat. She told them to prepare immediately.
To make everything look legitimate, Nicole and Zeph had nearly broken their legs hauling water tanks

upstairs yesterday.
This time, Nicole didn’t hold back. She gave the Goodmans two water tanks in return.
Gabrielle looked thrilled. “You two really know how to get things. We asked around everywhere and still couldn’t find any.”
She insisted on trading food for them, but Nicole refused. “If you ever get drought-resistant or heat- resistant experimental seeds, just save us a batch.”
It wasn’t just Gabrielle. The rest of the apartment complex had also started treating the 18th floor like a weather vane.
This time, they learned their lesson.
The second they saw people on the 18th floor hauling back water tanks, they rushed out to get tanks themselves without even asking questions.
Nicole’s group had survived too well for too long. People were convinced someone up there had inside information. Following them had to be the right move.
Overnight, water tanks became hot commodities.
Weasel, who kept getting asked for water tanks by customers, was seriously questioning his life choices
now.
Nicole had traded 100 pounds of potatoes for a mountain of supplies from him, including several water
tanks.
He was losing his mind.
He had been so proud of himself for unloading useless junk, and now, people were offering 20 pounds of potatoes for a single tank.
What was he supposed to do? Sure, the boss approved the deal at the time, but that guy changed his mind every other day.
Weasel was sure the boss was going to beat him to death over this.
Inside, he was already screaming. Nicole got him again!
“Achoo!”
Nicole sneezed several times in a row and rubbed her nose hard.
Zeph handed her hot water. “Are you catching a cold?”
“No” Nicole’s eyelid twitched nonstop. “Feels like somebody’s cursing me out.”
