Chapter 256
Hughie completely missed the meaning behind Nicole’s words. “Nah. Jeremy and I had a couple of drinks last night. Barely slept.”
“What are you banging on doors for this early?”
Hughie forced out a strained smile. “Nicole… We’ve decided to quit.”
As painful as it was, staying alive mattered more.
They had to admit it. Nicole really knew what she was doing.
Whether it was the typhoon floods or the deep freeze, she always prepared better than everyone else, and she constantly looked out for them, too.
As for Zeph, that guy stayed calm no matter what happened.
Then there were the Goodmans. With government connections, they always got information faster than
ordinary people.
Listening to smart advice kept you alive.
They had survived this far by following the right people, and they planned to keep doing exactly that. If they rationed carefully, the food they currently had could probably last around four years.
Still, quitting their jobs wouldn’t happen overnight, so every second counted now.
The entire Hughie squad mobilized and worked with Zeph to haul the horizontal water tanks onto the
rooftop.
Including the seven they had brought back earlier, they now had fourteen tanks total. Each could store
two tons of water.
Two of those belonged to the Goodmans, meaning the 18th floor could stockpile twenty-four tons
altogether.
Even if they rationed heavily, 24 tons would only last 4 months at best.
What about after that?
Nicole reassured them.
“If the extreme heat really comes, even if the city’s drainage systems collapse, two or three months should still be enough time for the floodwater to evaporate. The city will figure something out eventually.”
“Nicole’s right,” Jeremy agreed after thinking it over. “Before running water existed, people survived on well water.”
Beatrice still looked worried. “But if the temperature gets too high, water won’t store forever. What if it goes bad?”

“I traded for purification tablets. We can drop them into the tanks when the time comes.”
“Nicole, you’re seriously amazing.”
Nicole immediately shoved the credit elsewhere. “Honestly, I didn’t know any of this either. Zeph’s the one who brought it up.”
Hughie instantly started sucking up. “Zeph, you seriously know everything. Total survival expert.”
Zeph, who got handed the blame out of nowhere, replied flatly, “I just happen to know a little.”
Just as they finished arranging the water tanks, Gabrielle came upstairs to shovel snow.
After hearing she had managed to get two large water barrels, Jeremy and Hughie immediately stepped in to help, carrying snow downstairs for her.
The rest of the Goodmans weren’t home, and nobody wanted Gabrielle slipping while running back and forth between floors.
So the group gave the rooftop snow to her first and filled the Goodmans’ water tanks completely before doing anything else.
That left very little clean snow behind.
Beatrice grew uneasy. “What if it stops snowing? Or the temperature suddenly spikes before we finish storing enough water?”
Nicole stayed relaxed.
“Probably won’t happen. Besides, the original seven tanks we filled earlier are already full. If we conserve carefully, we’ll be fine. You guys should finish quitting work as soon as possible. We’ll keep coming up here over the next few days to collect snow and fill the remaining tanks.”
In reality, Nicole had no intention of relying on melted snow at all.
Once Hughie’s group left, she would just fill the tanks using water from the storage space instead. 1
At this point, everyone accepted that Nicole and Zeph had more survival experience than they did. Following their lead was enough.
Around noon, Hughie was cooking in the kitchen when Jeremy suddenly shouted from the living room.
Startled, Hughie ran out, gripping a spatula. “What happened?”
