Chapter 258
The floodwaters no longer surged beneath the surface.
Under the blazing sunlight, the ice melted rapidly. Its surface turned slick and smooth, leaving the people who fell in with nothing to grab onto.
Two survivors reacted quickly and sprinted toward the apartment building. Unfortunately, they weren’t faster than the spreading cracks.
One slipped on the ice and crashed down. The next second, both of them plunged straight into the freezing water.
After surviving over a year of disasters, their bodies had already reached the limit. They were weak to
begin with.
Ice water flooded into their mouths and noses. They struggled desperately for a few moments before disappearing beneath the surface for good.
Static crackled from the walkie-talkie, pulling Nicole back to reality.
“Nicole,” Zeph said, “the extreme heat came early.”
Nicole couldn’t remember the exact date from her previous life, but it definitely arrived sooner this time. The ice was breaking apart much faster than before.
Unease crept into her chest. “Do you think the sunlight looks too bright?”
Zeph knocked on the door from outside. “Yeah, and the temperature’s climbing too fast.”
Nicole opened the door, and their eyes met.
A lot of people had died from heat in their previous lives.
This time, the temperature started skyrocketing right from the beginning. The outcome would only be
worse.
Just remembering that suffocating steam-room heat made Nicole’s scalp tingle. If she had the choice, she would rather deal with the deep freeze. At least you could still hide under blankets.
Seeing the worry in her expression, Zeph comforted her. “We prepared ahead of time. We’ll survive this,
too.”
Yeah. They would survive.
Back then, she had endured everything alone, even through hunger and water shortages.
Now, she had a storage space, a dog… A boyfriend, and a few friends she could trust.
Compared to her previous life, things were already so much better.
After breakfast, the two discussed the potatoes.

Even with a growth accelerant, the extreme heat had arrived too early. The potatoes still weren’t fully
mature.
Nicole dug up one pot.
The potatoes were noticeably smaller than the previous batch, and the taste was harsher and more bitter. Harvesting now would slash the yield, and immature potatoes spoiled much faster. 1
Zeph asked, “Do you want to harvest them?”
The potato plants sitting on the balcony had already started wilting under the sunlight as the temperature climbed.
Nicole thought for a moment. “Not yet. I’ll move them into the black-soil garden inside the storage space
first and see if they keep growing.”
So they moved dozens of pots into the storage space and lined them up neatly inside the garden.
“Zeph, I’m hot.
Since waking up, Poppy had already changed clothes three times. Even after putting on a dress, she still complained about the heat.
The ice had only recently started melting, and the water temperature remained freezing cold, but the 18th floor sat directly beneath the rooftop.
The concrete rooftop had already been baked pale gray-white under the sun. Even though the air temperature was only 102 degrees, the ground temperature had already reached 162 degrees.
Sitting in the living room, they could still feel waves of heat seeping down from the ceiling nonstop.
This was the worst part about living on the top floor. Even normal summers could become unbearable without air conditioning, let alone during extreme heat.
Poppy wasn’t the only one suffering. Even Cola looked miserable.
The usually energetic dog sat quietly on the floor with his tongue hanging out, desperately trying to cool
down.
Nicole walked into the master bedroom of Zeph’s apartment and pulled out the battery pack and air cooler, making sure to add ice inside first.
She wanted to turn on the actual air conditioner, but the outdoor unit made too much noise.
The 18th floor already had enough water tanks to attract attention. If they also started running air conditioning openly, they might as well announce to every survivor in the area that they had plenty of water and electricity
Better to wait and see first.
