Chapter 270

Nicole’s words scared Hughie so badly that his face turned pale. He immediately reached up to touch
his cheek.
“Ow…”
Getting hit in the face by giant cockroaches had already been horrifying enough. Now he had learned the things had actually bitten him, too.
What if his face got ruined? Beatrice loved this face more than anything.
Nicole stayed calm. “Disinfect it with iodine and take some antibiotics.”
While cleaning the wound, Hughie looked at Beatrice with a pitiful expression. “Babe, if my face gets messed up, you won’t leave me, right?”
Beatrice looked completely exhausted by him. “I won’t.”
Everyone else watching the exchange fell silent.
The apartment was overflowing with giant cockroaches, yet these two still had the energy to flirt. At this point, nobody could tell whether they were fearless or simply shameless.
After treating the bite, Hughie’s group immediately went back to work and resealed the balcony with lingering fear hanging over them. 1
Nicole didn’t have enough stainless steel mesh to share with everyone. Handing out tiny scraps would only look strange, so she chose not to mention it.
Instead, she warned them, “Seal every drain completely. Scatter cockroach poison and insecticide around the balcony, too.”
Completely sealing the balcony wasn’t realistic, either. Without airflow, the upper floors would turn into giant metal ovens and roast everyone alive.
People had no choice but to adapt.
Fortunately, Hughie’s group still had leftover metal panels.
They drilled countless tiny holes through them, small enough to keep the giant cockroaches out but large enough to allow air through.
Life was already miserable enough, so people tried to hold on to whatever small comforts they could find. After finishing the balcony, they even opened a few cold beers to celebrate.
With those two idiots constantly joking around, the atmosphere never stayed gloomy for long.
Before long, everyone gathered together again.
Hughie raised his beer. “Today, it’s giant cockroaches. Tomorrow, it’ll probably be something even

worse. Might as well enjoy life while we still can.”
Nicole returned to her apartment and brought back a huge pitcher of ice-cold milkshake. 1
The icy sweetness sliding down their throats instantly refreshed everyone. It felt as if every pore in their bodies had finally opened again.
Hughie drank two cups in a row. “Nicole, you seriously make the best milkshakes. Ours always turn out awful. They get all icy and gritty, and the flavor tastes completely off.”
“That’s because you idiots never stored your ingredients properly. Everything got ruined during the
freeze.” 1
Jeremy was equally impressed. Thinking about the supplies piled up in his own apartment, he immediately asked, “So how’d you make it?”
Nicole instantly pushed the credit elsewhere. “Zeph made this batch.”
The two grown men immediately started praising Zeph like fangirls.
Zeph calmly redirected the praise right back at Nicole. “She taught me.”
Seriously? These two somehow managed to show off their relationship again.
Hughie wiggled his eyebrows at Nicole knowingly.
Back then, she could barely stand having Zeph around.
Now, look at him. This guy used to walk around carrying guns. Now, he stood in the kitchen with a spatula in hand, happily cooking for her every single day.
Nicole was clearly the one in control of this relationship.
Still, watching Zeph willingly bend for the woman he loved didn’t make him seem weak at all. If anything, it made him look even more reliable.
As the conversation continued, the topic eventually shifted to the highly accomplished rabbit army.
Then Hughie suddenly asked a dangerous question.
“Hey… Do you think giant cockroaches are edible?”
Nicole immediately shut the idea down.
“These giant cockroaches are mutating and reproducing way too fast, and they’re crawling around in literal garbage heaps. They’re covered in bacteria and viruses. Unless you have a death wish, don’t even
think about it…”
Before she could finish, miserable screams suddenly drifted up from below.
Since the balconies were sealed shut, everyone hurried to the windows with binoculars.
