After closing the door behind them, Nicole asked Zeph curiously, “Have you ever eaten canned rat meat
before?
“I have.” He stored his share together with hers. “The texture’s nothing special. Barely tastes like anything.”
They weren’t short on food yet, so there was no reason to touch the canned rat meat now. Better to save it for a time when supplies actually became tight.
Earlier, on their way back, Nicole had spotted a snake slithering into an empty apartment on the sixth
floor.
The sight had stayed with her long enough to make her uneasy. As soon as she got home, she took out realgar powder and scattered it around the apartment.
Sure enough, more snakes started appearing over the next few days.
Unfortunately for the snakes, they never had much chance of making it to the upper floors.
Survivors on every level waited with weapons ready in hand. Now that the red-eyed rats had become harder to find, nobody wanted to miss the chance to catch snakes instead.
Before long, people even started fighting over them. Some intercepted catches halfway through. Others openly stole prey from each other. A few groups fought over territory outright.
Every day became louder and more chaotic than the last.
When Nicole opened the window, she could faintly smell meat cooking somewhere downstairs.
Meanwhile, the people hiding on the top floor continued enduring their miserable lives while watching the floodwaters slowly recede day by day. 1
After calculating the timing carefully, Nicole finally started delivering vegetables to Hughie’s group.
To avoid exposing herself, she deliberately chose vegetables suitable for hydroponic growing from her storage space and pinched off the roots before handing them over.
“Ta-da! Good news. The hydroponic vegetables are finally ready to harvest.”
Good thing they were communicating through walkie-talkies.
If they had been face-to-face, her acting probably would’ve fallen apart instantly.
Nicole still refused to meet the baldies in person. “I left everything outside the door. Just come pick it up.
Hughie burst out the door like he was competing in a sprint. The moment he saw the vegetables, he nearly started crying.

Pretty much everyone outside had shaved their heads already, and she had no interest in standing out.
Zeph didn’t pressure her. “If you like your long hair, you can keep it.”
Now that both he and Poppy had short hair, the water they saved would be more than enough for Nicole to wash hers without attracting suspicion.
“Nicole, it feels amazing!” Poppy grinned while rubbing her head with a damp towel. “One wipe, and you’re done.”
Nicole honestly didn’t care much whether her hair stayed long or short. Standing out too much would only bring trouble.
“Do mine, too.”
Zeph looked mildly surprised. “Your long hair looks good on you. It feels kind of a shame to shave it.”
“It’s fine. I’ll grow it back after the heat wave passes.”
