Chapter 285

Nicole had worried she might not be able to store the steel underwater. Instead, it worked almost effortlessly.
Zeph stayed close beside her the entire time, keeping watch not only on her but on the dark water around
them.
They cleared out several rebar suppliers in a row. Coil after coil vanished into the storage space, stacking neatly across the black soil garden in towering piles.
The pressure underwater made it hard to notice at first, but the materials were massive and unbelievably heavy. After half an hour, exhaustion started creeping in fast. The mental strain hit even harder.
For safety’s sake, Nicole finally retreated into the storage space to rest.
Zeph handed her an energy drink and some chocolate while helping massage the stiffness from her
arms and legs.
“Take a break.”
Knowing time inside the storage space was limited, he refused to waste a second. Seeing the living room still empty, he headed into the garden and dragged back a bed.
Not just any bed, either.
The thing was massive, an oversized king bed nearly seven feet wide. Judging from the designer label, it had probably cost well into the five-figure range before the disasters hit.
His taste in mattresses honestly rivaled his taste in women. The latex mattress he picked out looked just as absurdly expensive.
Zeph finished making the bed and glanced over at her.
“Go sleep for a bit.”
As for himself, resting never even crossed his mind. He wandered into the fields to work instead.
Spotting that the watermelons Nicole planted had ripened, he picked more than a dozen and stacked them nearby.
Once Nicole had eaten, rested, and recovered enough energy, the two of them headed underwater again to keep collecting structural steel, steel pipes, and thin rebar wire for tying reinforcement together.
They worked nonstop for hours.
By the time they finally looked up, harsh sunlight had already flooded the surface above them. Long beams of light cut through the murky water.
Supplies mattered, but so did knowing when to stop before they completely wore themselves out.

With the water level dropping lower every day, if the dolphins didn’t find their way back, they would
sooner or later end up stranded and butchered for food.
Nicole had no interest in eating them. If anything, she hoped the animals survived.
As long as creatures like them still existed, maybe humanity still had hope, too.
The two of them quietly watched the pod disappear into the distance before swimming toward the giant billboard. After confirming nobody was nearby, they climbed back onto the surface.
The afternoon sun was brutal.
One second, they were underwater in the cold. The next, they stepped straight into scorching heat that felt like being inside an industrial oven.
