The crowd kept rushing in.
Some went for the supplies. Others went straight for the inflatable raft.
No matter how good Beatrice was in a fight, two fists couldn’t hold off four hands. Part of the supplies got snatched, and her hand was slashed. Someone even tried stabbing the inflatable raft directly.
“If that inflatable raft hadn’t been puncture-resistant, we probably wouldn’t have made it back,” she said.
The world felt too unfamiliar. Beatrice leaned against Hughie, exhausted, and started to doubt human nature itself.
Nicole didn’t know how to comfort her.
The apocalypse had only just begun.
Before they could even catch their breath, there was knocking downstairs.
Not just one or two people, but a whole mass of them. At a glance, there had to be dozens, packed so tightly that they filled the hallway all the way up to the 17th floor.
Nicole frowned.
Were they trying to force their way in?
Beatrice’s supplies were earned by risking her life, while these people were too scared to go out and survive on their own. They set their sights on the 18th floor instead, looking for an easy target.
Everyone was speechless. No one felt like talking. They picked up their knives and went downstairs.
Four pairs of eyes, sharp with murderous intent, froze the crowd in place.
Fear flickered across the crowd’s faces, but they weren’t willing to leave. With several dozen of them against four people, they felt the numbers were still on their side, and their confidence crept back.
A middle-aged man with glasses stepped forward, smiling ingratiatingly.
“Don’t misunderstand. We don’t mean any harm.”
Nicole’s voice was cold. “What do you want?”
“My name’s Oliver Perry,” he said. “The neighbors picked me as the building rep. I wanted to talk to you about forming a group to go look for supplies together.”
He kept smiling, but when the four of them stayed silent behind the door, he had no choice but to explain further.
“There’s been no government relief so far. Outside is complete chaos. Going out alone is dangerous. Even if you find supplies, you’ll just get robbed on the way back. So we talked it over and decided to pick people with good fighting ability to go together. At least that way, we can watch each other’s backs.”
“Do you have a boat or an inflatable raft?” Nicole asked.
“Well, that’s why we wanted to talk to you,” Oliver said awkwardly. “We’re all neighbors. We see each other every day. If a real disaster hits, we should help each other out, right?”
The first half sounded polite. The second half was a threat.

Nicole paused for a moment.
“Give us a second. We’ll talk it over.”
She shot the other three a look and moved toward the window.
“What do you think?”
Beatrice was hot-tempered and hated being threatened. If they wanted the inflatable raft, they could step over her corpse first. If she dragged a few down with her, it would still be worth it. Anyone not afraid to die could try.
“These people are scheming,” she said. “What about lending them the inflatable raft?”
