Nicole and Zeph frowned.

What the hell? Surviving was already hard enough. Now, people were getting terrorized by outsiders on their own turf?

Most people would’ve kept their heads down in someone else’s territory. These guys were out here acting like they owned the place.

In the dim alley, several men surrounded three people sprawled on the ground, kicking them over and over while barking out curses between laughs.

One carried a long sword, another had a gun, and another swung a baseball bat.

Killing somebody would’ve been quick, but they weren’t trying to end it quickly. Every hit came harder than the last, like they were getting drunk on it.

The more the victims screamed and begged, the more excited they got.

One of them raised his blade high, face twisted with excitement as he drove it down.

Thunk!

The rush of violence had gone to their heads so badly that they never noticed danger creeping out of the dark behind them.

The blade never landed. Instead, the man got skewered clean through.

Nicole didn’t hesitate. She yanked the knife free and drove it straight into the second man.

Zeph moved even faster. He ripped the gun away, snapped one man’s neck in a single motion, then spun and kicked another hard enough to send him crashing sideways.

The two of them worked with brutal efficiency, wiping out all five without giving them a chance to scream or beg.

Nicole swept her flashlight toward the ground.

The three survivors looked awful. Blood covered their faces. Bruises had swollen so badly that she could barely make out their features anymore.

Out of basic human decency, she asked, “You guys okay?”

The flashlight beam hit one man directly in the eyes. He lifted a shaking hand to block it, lips trembling.

“It’s you?”

The voice was slurred, but Nicole recognized it instantly.

It was Weasel.

Again

Seriously? Why was this guy everywhere?

Nicole swung the flashlight around and spotted a water tanker parked nearby.

Got it. Somebody had tried to hijack the shipment.

Weasel staggered to his feet, wiping blood from his face with pure disbelief. “Is it really you? You saved us?”

As he spoke, he hurried over to help another man stand.

The guy was tall, around six feet or so.

“Boss, this is the girl I told you about. She’s the real deal. If she hadn’t shown up tonight, we’d already be dead.”

The man looked to be in his thirties, with closely cropped hair and an honest, almost plain face. However, the sharp, worldly look in his eyes said he was anything but simple.

Nobody survived this apocalypse, built a massive black-market trading network, and stayed clean.

The man wiped blood from his face and gave Nicole and Zeph a weak smile. “Thank you for helping us.”

“Not a big deal.”

Now that she saw they were alive, Nicole started thinking about the two darlings waiting at home. She didn’t bother with more small talk and turned to leave.

“Wait.”

The man stopped them.

“My name’s Sven Lindberg. I still don’t know your names, or where you live.”

In the apocalypse, no sane person asked strangers for their names and addresses. Even if somebody dared to ask, that didn’t mean the other person would answer.

Nicole smiled faintly. “What, are you planning to repay us?”

Sven froze for a second before nodding seriously. “Of course. You saved our lives. We have to repay that. Tell me what you want.”

Before she could answer, he turned toward Weasel.

“We traded for quite a bit of food today…” he said.

Weasel lowered his voice. “She’s not short on food.”

“Alright, then.” Sven was surprisingly straightforward about it. “How about I send you a truck of fresh
