Chapter 347
Poppy and Cola couldn’t bear to say goodbye to Gabrielle, so they rode along to see her off.
The research institute sat on the outskirts, a cluster of buildings bringing together scientists from different fields, with a large residential area for their families.
These days, anyone who could still afford to drive stood out. The Hummer pulled up outside the housing building and drew more than a few envious looks.
Nicole stayed with the car while Zeph helped carry things upstairs.
Gabrielle thanked them again and again.
“We’re on the third floor. Come visit when you have time.”
Where there were people, there would always be problems, but this place was still under city control. The housing complex had its own logistics and supervision. Anyone looking to stir trouble would think twice.
Plus, Gabrielle knew how to run a household. They wouldn’t be struggling here.
Back at Crownview Residences, Nicole couldn’t help feeling that the once lively building felt hollow. Only the 18th floor was still occupied, and the silence pressed in. 2
Zeph fixed the main entrance and replaced the lock. It wouldn’t be easy for outsiders to get in anymore.
At the same time, power was restored to the three doors on the 16th floor. Anyone trying to force their way up would have a hard time.
They settled into a closed-off routine, rarely going downstairs. During the day, the AC ran nonstop. The two little ones ate snacks and watched cartoons. Nicole read medical books, while Zeph, aside from training them, seemed almost idle.
After sunset, Nicole took Cola up to the rooftop.
Cola had lost some weight lately, worn down by Zeph’s intensified training.
His bite strength was incredible. He could carry improvised explosive packs and fuel bottles weighing over ten pounds, jumping and climbing without slowing down.
Nicole took out a ball and tossed it, letting him run and burn off energy.
After a few throws, her expression changed.
Zeph came up. “What’s wrong?”
Nicole told Cola to sit, then threw the ball again. It rolled, drifting toward the south side. She tried a few more times, and the result was the same.
Nicole’s face tightened. “Something’s off with this building.”
It was an older complex to begin with. It had been soaked by floodwater, then frozen for a year, and now baked under extreme heat.
The damage had probably been there for a while, but she just hadn’t noticed it before. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have collapsed during the earthquake in her previous life.
The construction here was decent compared to most. Many buildings with shallow foundations or poor materials

had already collapsed or cracked apart.
Which meant this place wasn’t safe, either.
Before the earthquake hit, they needed to find somewhere else.
Even so, a major quake would bring down most buildings. Finding a safe place wouldn’t be easy.
Zeph sat beside her. “We’ll take it one step at a time. We’ll go look tomorrow.”
With that in mind, they got up early the next day. After breakfast, they stored their valuables in the storage space and headed out together to search.
Before leaving the complex, Nicole and Zeph walked around the building. Sure enough, there were cracks along the south wall.
They weren’t obvious. From a distance, you couldn’t tell the structure had started to lean.
That didn’t mean it wasn’t happening, though.
