Chapter 38
When Beatrice thought about what Jeremy had gone through, her temper snapped. “We’ll beat them up and throw them out!”
Sure, Jeremy had been an idiot, but he had helped stock up all the meds Nicole needed. Not only was everything well-organized, but it also saved her a ton of money and hassle.
As his friend, there was no way Nicole could just stand by. Besides, when they were kids getting into fights, Jeremy had once taken a brick for her.
They didn’t need to say much. Beatrice kicked the door hard and barked, “Everyone inside, listen up! You’ve go one minute. If you don’t come out, I won’t be nice!”
Silence answered her.
Nicole pulled a crowbar out of her bag and handed it over.
Beatrice had the strength for it. The crowbar slammed against the door again and again, loud thuds echoing down
the hall.
“Who are you people?”
A voice came from behind them.
A couple in their late fifties was coming up the stairs, holding the hand of a little girl, maybe eight or nine. The man was carrying a heavy duffel bag with an inflatable raft inside.
Nicole recognized it instantly. She had bought that for Jeremy under a fake name.
That brand wasn’t cheap. Most people would’ve gone for a basic one.
Which meant this family hadn’t just been living off Jeremy, but they had taken the supplies she bought for him,
too.
Nicole walked over, grabbed the girl by the collar, and dragged her to the door. “Open it now. Or I’ll kill your parents and your daughter right here!”
She pulled out a knife as she spoke.
The girl burst into tears. “Mom! Mom!”
The couple lunged forward, stomping and shouting, “Help! Someone’s killing people!”
“Go ahead and scream,” Nicole said coldly. “Let the whole building hear how you took over someone else’s home and pushed him to the edge!”
There was no way one woman could’ve forced Jeremy out alone. This was a group effort.
The girl might’ve been young, but she understood everything.
In a world like this, kids could smile at you one second and stab you the next. The more innocent the smile, the darker the heart underneath.
Maybe they didn’t want to be like this, but hunger made people desperate.
Nicole knew that better than anyone. She had been stabbed before.

The door finally opened. A middle-aged woman with a sallow face stood there, yelling, “What do you want? I already said we don’t know any Jeremy! Keep this up, and I’m calling the cops!”
Beatrice swung her fist. “The hell you are!”
The punch dropped the woman instantly. Blood poured from her mouth, and a few teeth flew loose.
The boy inside screamed and grabbed a glass from the table, hurling it at them.
Everything in the apartment, including the furniture and the clothes in the cabinets, belonged to Jeremy. This was definitely his place.
The boy charged at them viciously. Nicole slapped him hard, then slammed him into the wall.
No matter what kind of people the adults were, she had to admit that the kids had been well-fed.
They had survived by eating Jeremy’s food, too. Not only were they ungrateful, but they had even kicked him out just to save themselves another mouth to feed.
The way the boy came at her, full of hostility, without a hint of regret, told Nicole everything she needed to know.
He knew exactly what they had done. Maybe he even took part in it, and he didn’t feel the slightest bit ashamed.
The woman wailed at the top of her lungs. The older couple jumped around, putting on a whole dramatic show,
but it didn’t matter.
Everyone else in the building was starving. No one had the energy to care.
