Chapter 387
Alex went through everything about Oakhaven Gardens in detail, even mentioning that Nicole and Zeph could claim a plot of land near Building Five for planting.
Nicole pulled a bag of potatoes from the trunk, weighed out 20 pounds, and paid the rent.
The four of them drove over to Building Five. The buildings were spread out, and with Building Four between them, they had enough privacy that no one would be watching their every move.
Just thinking about it felt good.
“Poppy, Cola, we’ve got a new place. Are you happy?”
“Yeah!”
“Woof!”
The entrance door had probably been wood. During the deep freeze, someone had torn it off for firewood.
They parked downstairs and headed up.
Nicole picked the fourth floor right away. Unit 401 had a terrace over 1,000 square feet, perfect for planting.
It was the largest unit with four bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, two balconies, and two bathrooms. The interior living space was roughly 1,600 square feet. It had great light and good airflow, but it had been flooded before, so fixing it up would take real work.
Units 402 and 403 were three-bedroom layouts, good enough to clean up and use for raising rabbits.
Nicole asked, “Fourth floor, or should we go higher?”
Zeph shook his head. “Fourth is better. We don’t know when the next quake will hit. Too high isn’t safe.”
The terrace wasn’t ideal either, but no one lived above them, and they could install a sliding steel door to block it
off.
Once they settled on the fourth floor, they went through every level, closing hallway windows and wiring the fire doors shut with layers of steel wire.
On the sixth floor, they found piles of sand, cement, and lime left over from construction.
The sand was still usable, but the cement and lime had hardened. Breaking them up would take time. Luckily, they already had plenty stored in Nicole’s storage space.
Neither of them was a trained builder, but they could manage. It just wouldn’t look polished.
Back on the fourth floor, they talked through the renovation. It would take time and effort, and would wear them
out.
Nicole suggested, “Why don’t we leave it unfinished for now? See how things go with the people here before we commit.”
No point putting in all that work only to leave if things didn’t work out.
Unlike Crownview Residences, where everyone looked out for themselves, Oakhaven Gardens ran as a group under Alex’s lead.

If things went bad here, it wouldn’t be one or two people. It would be over a hundred.
Zeph agreed. “I’ll take two fire doors and modify them for the entrance. We can drive the Hummer inside and park it in the hallway.” 1
Later, they could install powered steel doors on the third and fifth floor stairwells to improve security
Nicole nodded. Still, they needed a believable explanation for where the supplies came from, so they would head out at night, load what they needed onto a truck, and drive it in.
For now, they needed to clean the place up. Dust, gravel, and chunks of cement were everywhere. It would take serious effort.
They went inside, pulled out cleaning supplies, tables, and chairs, and carried in two buckets of water.
The sunlight was harsh, so they worked together to hang curtains, keeping everything out of sight. In that kind of heat, even temperature-regulating clothing didn’t help much. Within minutes, they were soaked in sweat.
