Chapter 407
Nicole pulled out her phone and recorded a video. If they somehow made it through all of this, it would be worth keeping.
Zeph carried in a few more buckets of water. Nicole dipped a hand in.
It wasn’t scalding anymore, but still warm.
The long-awaited rain hadn’t cooled anything down. If anything, it seemed to draw more heat up from the ground.
She stood there watching the downpour, sweat already forming on her skin. It felt worse than the dry heat. Right now, she felt like a baked potato wrapped in foil and forgotten in the oven.
She couldn’t take it. She turned on the AC.
After washing her face, she checked for burns. There were none, but her skin was flushed.
Nicole pulled out a sheet mask and pressed it onto her face.
“Want one?” she asked Zeph.
He glanced over, uninterested. “I’m good.”
She tilted her head, studying him. His skin looked fine. Maybe he was just thick-skinned.
Back in her room, she lay down and drifted off without realizing it. At some point, Poppy’s laughter woke her.
“A rainbow! It’s a rainbow!”
Nicole pushed the window open. The rain had stopped, and a bright arc stretched across the sky.
A rainbow, in the apocalypse, looked almost unreal.
Nicole stepped out onto the terrace, eyes fixed on the band of color glowing against the horizon.
The sky had cleared, washed clean. The rainbow shimmered like something out of a dream. If she didn’t look down at the barren ground below, it almost didn’t feel like the apocalypse at all.
She took a few photos.
Poppy hugged Cola and struck a pose. “Make sure you get the rainbow!”
A few solo shots, a couple together, even a group photo.
Zeph kept working, hauling in as much rainwater as he could and storing it away.
After a shower, he came out to find Poppy asleep on the couch again. A flicker of concern crossed his face. “When is she going to be fully better?”
Poppy had improved a lot over the past few days, but concussions were unpredictable. Some cleared in days. Some took months. Some lingered for years. A few never fully went away.
Nicole kept her voice steady. “She’s doing much better already. It’ll take time. She needs rest.”
She planned to put together something warm and nutritious to help with recovery.
Building 5 stood a bit apart from the others. The soup would be mild, and with the door closed, the smell wouldn’t
carry.

Zeph didn’t waste time and got started on renovations.
Neither of them really knew how to do it.
Nicole dug through the massive archive she had downloaded before everything fell apart and found a book on construction and interior work.
Zeph flipped through it. “Should we tile the floor?”
They had plenty of tiles stockpiled, but they would only be here for a year, and the materials wouldn’t be reusable.
