Chapter 410
Even after a late night, Zeph still woke early. The fatigue finally caught up to him. The moment he pulled Nicole into his arms, he fell asleep again.
They didn’t wake until dusk, then headed to the well together.
The scalding rain had only lasted a few hours. Two days after the skies cleared, the ground had already cracked dry again, but the storm had replenished the groundwater.
There was more water in the well now, so each unit received a larger share. Zeph and Nicole got two buckets.
Nicole came down every day, storing the water in her space for irrigation.
The entire terrace had been planted with drought-resistant sweet potatoes. Poppy had planted peanuts and greens. She took it seriously, watering and shading them every day until they finally sprouted.
But in less than half a day, the shoots were scorched by the heat.
It crushed her.
Nicole had to comfort her, promising new seeds once the extreme heat passed.
After collecting water, Zeph carried both buckets with ease, one in each hand.
Nicole didn’t even get the chance to help.
The man at the well grinned, his face creasing. “Nicole, you chose well. Mr. Dawson’s got some serious ability.”
Nicole smiled and followed behind Zeph.
“Nicole,” Alex called from a distance. “Wait.”
He hurried over, slightly out of breath. “Something’s wrong.
Isaac had suddenly doubled over with severe abdominal pain, cramping badly. Nicole was the only one in the compound with medical training. There was no one else to turn to.
In the apocalypse, expired food was common. Mold toxins could easily trigger stomach issues, sometimes fatal.
Isaac was a decent man, and since Alex had come personally, Nicole agreed to take a look. Medicine needed practice.
Isaac lived in Building 1, just above Alex. They were close.
His wife had died during the deep freeze. Now it was just him and his son, Ethan Prescott.
When Nicole arrived, Isaac’s face was pale, his hands clamped over his stomach. Sweat ran down his temples as he gritted his teeth. “I-I’m fine. It’ll pass.”
On the table sat a bowl of sweet potato porridge. There wasn’t much sweet potato, even less rice. It was so thin that you could see your reflection in it.
A plate of finely chopped dried sweet potato leaves sat beside it, cooked down into a dark brown mash with no trace of oil. It looked more like feed than food.
Even so, by current standards, it was decent. Plenty of people outside didn’t even get sweet potato skins. And there was still half a plate of stir-fried squid.

With this heat, dried leaves wouldn’t mold. The sweet potatoes had just been harvested, so they were fine. The rice from the community center could have gone bad, but there was barely any in the pot. It shouldn’t cause this kind
of reaction.
Nicole turned to Ethan. “Does your father have any other medical conditions?”
The young man looked about 18, panic written all over his face. “No. He’s always been healthy.”
Two years into this disaster, that alone was luck. They had made it this far without serious illness.
Nicole asked where it hurt, ruling out appendicitis and bowel obstruction. “We need to flush his stomach and induce vomiting.”
“No. I’m fine.” Pain twisted through him like a knife, sweat pouring down, but Isaac still refused. “I just ate meat/ I’m not throwing it up.”
He hadn’t had meat in months. The thought of wasting it was unbearable.
