Zeph kept it brief and laid out his suspicion.

Alex thought it over and realized something was indeed off. “Don’t worry. There’s a retired geologist in Building 2. I’ll contact him. You two start packing.”

Zeph hung up and moved immediately. “Poppy, grab the first aid kit.”

She tried to help gather supplies, but he stopped her. “Stay in the room. Don’t move.”

They worked fast. Furniture disappeared into storage within minutes. Zeph handled the AC.

They were almost done when the radio crackled again.

“Zeph, Nicole, pack up and assemble outside immediately. There’s a high probability of an earthquake.”

The moment the call ended, Alex found Ethan.

“Take my bike and go to the community center. Tell them an earthquake might be coming. They’ll notify the city.

Oakhaven Gardens had a well and animals, which gave them a chance to spot the warning signs early. Other people might not be so lucky.

Isaac ran out after them. “Be careful. Go!”

Alex switched on the broadcast system. “Emergency evacuation! Take only essentials. Move to the designated open area outside the compound.”

His own things were already packed. He slung his bag over his shoulder, grabbed Molly, and rushed downstairs, still shouting into the loudspeaker, “Move now! Leave everything else!”

He stepped outside just as Zeph pulled up in the Hummer.

Alex frowned. “The earthquake could hit any minute. Why are you driving?”

“I’ve got relatives who can’t move well. We need to check on them.”

Alex had the situation under control, so Zeph didn’t waste time. The Hummer shot out of the compound.

They already had a fallback location. Zeph drove with his usual confidence, racing down the road under the blazing sun.

Good thing the tires were built for it. Anything less might’ve melted.

They cut across highways and back roads, heading into a quieter area. In under 20 minutes, they reached an abandoned factory.

Zeph got out first, took Poppy’s hand, and led her through the building to the open land behind it.

Nicole used the moment to store the vehicle.

The ground was overgrown but brittle. After days of heat, the weeds snapped under the slightest pressure.

Cola moved ahead and circled the area, alert, while Zeph and Poppy stayed on guard.

Nicole switched on the radio. The emergency broadcast was still repeating the same warning: a major earthquake could strike at any time. Everyone was urged to move to open ground.

When Poppy turned back, she froze. A large orange escape pod stood behind her, the same one they had used during the tsunami.

This time, she barely reacted. She just looked up at Zeph.

He opened the hatch and motioned for Poppy to get in.

The pod was designed for families. It even had a child seat.

Zeph strapped her in and fitted a padded helmet over her head. “Don’t be scared. I’m right here.”

Poppy nodded. “I’m not scared.”
