Chapter 433
Nicole sat in the shade, cooling off with a portable fan as she finished a popsicle and two ice creams. By the time she looked up again, a pickup was creeping into view at the far end of the road.
She raised her binoculars and confirmed it was Weasel and his people.
There were four or five of them, all alert, scanning their surroundings and listening for anything out of place.
Once she was sure they hadn’t been followed, Nicole went downstairs and brought the water tanker out.
A few minutes later, the pickup pulled up in front of the cracked building.
Weasel hopped out. “Hey.”
Nicole let him wait a moment before stepping out from behind the truck.
He wiped the sweat off his face, muttering, “You burned through every favor I had.”
Still, he had gotten it done. The spray unit had been successfully modified.
They unloaded the equipment and walked her through how to put it together, how to start it, and how it ran.
Nicole nodded along as if she understood. “Yeah. Got it.”
At the same time, she recorded everything quietly, planning to review it later.
Water was too scarce for a live test, but Weasel patted the machine and said, “Don’t worry. It works. The range is over 30 feet.”
He kept going, pointing out common mistakes and basic fixes. “If anything breaks, come find us. It’s under warranty.”
Nicole thanked them. “My vehicle isn’t here yet. Help me move this inside.”
While the others checked the water, she pulled Weasel aside and slipped two packs of medicine into his hands.
Cold medicine and antibiotics.
It wasn’t much, but in times like this, it was worth a fortune.
“For you. Keep it quiet.”
Weasel didn’t open them, but he knew what they were the moment he felt them. His eyes reddened slightly. Having someone like her looking out for you made all the difference.
The water checked out. They drove off with the tanker and the pickup.
Nicole stored the spray unit in her storage space, waited another 20 minutes, then left in her off-road vehicle.
By the time she got back, evening had settled in, and Alex had news.
After pushing hard while keeping a cooperative stance, the authorities had agreed to Oakhaven Gardens’ terms.
Buildings 6 through 8 would be handed over to house refugees. In exchange, the community would receive 5,000 points, which could later be used to offset housing and supply costs in the new district.
Officials would also send staff to manage the refugees and provide basic aid.

For security, the city had coordinated with Grayport to station a unit in Westbridge to maintain order and keep things running.
However, manpower was stretched thin. Half the troops had been pulled to the military base, and the rest were tied up in rescue efforts and rebuilding in Grayport.
At best, a unit could arrive in a few days and be distributed across resettlement zones. For now, only police and patrol officers could be deployed.
For someone in Alex’s position, this was the best deal he could get.
