Chapter 437
The attackers kept cursing at Nicole, but no one dared charge again, wary that the burning torch might come down at any moment.
The crowd quickly fell back, putting distance between themselves and Building 5.
The leaders reacted fast, shifting their focus to the other buildings.
Buildings 1 through 3 were occupied. People stood on the terraces with weapons in hand, watching Building 5, nerves tight.
They had binoculars. They had heard the shouting about gasoline.
Seeing the attackers hold back told them everything.
No one had expected Zeph and Nicole to have fuel stockpiled, much less use it to drive off a crowd this way.
Alex moved at once. “Quick, make torches!”
Anyone with firewood grabbed dry branches, tying and lighting them. One by one, flames rose across Buildings 1 through 3.
The attackers were soaked. One spark would be enough.
Alex’s voice came through the radio. “Don’t panic. If they rush the buildings, we throw.”
The thugs were still human. Many had only joined in the last few days, driven by hunger, thinking they would get food and drink. Instead, they couldn’t even take down a single building with one family inside.
Then, from a distance, a sharp police siren cut through the night.
Through the darkness, a line of vehicles raced toward Oakhaven Gardens. Police cruisers led the way, followed by several massive trucks.
No… Not trucks. Military transports.
Panic spread through the attackers. Those dragged in to swell the numbers were the first to break, edging back before turning and running.
One ran, then another. Soon, half the group had scattered.
Some slipped back into the resettlement site, pretending nothing had happened. Others ran blindly into the dark.
They had killed staff members. There was no going back now.
Once the formation broke, there was no holding it together.
The leaders cursed under their breath, staring at the approaching lights. In the end, they had no choice but to abandon Oakhaven Gardens..
They had figured a community of barely more than 100 people would fall without much of a fight. Instead, they had taken losses and gained nothing.
Now, all they wanted was to run. But where?
Gunfire ripped through the darkness from every direction, sounding like the Fourth of July. Help had arrived, just later than expected.

Nicole packed away the equipment while Zeph got Alex on the radio. As tactfully as he could, he explained that neither of them wanted attention. They just wanted to live a quiet life.
Alex understood immediately. “Got it. I’ll take it from here.”
The gunfire went on through the night, fading in and out. It wasn’t until daybreak that everything finally fell silent.
Nicole paid no attention to what was happening outside. She turned off the lights and went straight to bed. When she woke again, it was past 7 a.m.
The bodies below had already been cleared away.
Alex walked through Oakhaven Gardens with Jasper, and the two stopped beneath Building 5 to talk for a few minutes.
When they finished, Alex headed back into Oakhaven Gardens while Jasper crossed the breached barricade and returned to the resettlement site.
