Chapter 439

Molly wouldn’t leave Cola alone. She trailed after him all day, every day, and nothing could scare her off. It was driving him crazy.
Nicole laughed. “Looks like you’ve got yourself an admirer.”
If it had been another dog, maybe it wouldn’t have been a problem. But Molly was a poodle, full of restless energy.
Nicole glanced at Zeph. “What if we set Cola up with Molly?”
“Woof!” Cola reacted instantly, dropping to the ground and turning his head away, the refusal obvious.
Zeph, more measured as always, said, “She’s probably not his type.”
Nicole didn’t need an explanation. One look at Cola’s expression said enough. “Alright, alright. I’m kidding. Dont get mad.”
Times like these didn’t leave much room for companionship, but if Cola wasn’t interested, she wouldn’t push.
“He might think he’s human,” Zeph added, almost offhandedly.
Poppy crouched beside Cola. “He’s just like us.”
“Woof!”
The massive earthquake had reshaped the land. Finding water had become even harder.
The old well-digger spent several days under the scorching sun surveying the area before finally marking a spot more than half a mile from the resettlement site.
His skin had darkened further.
“We can try. The quake shifted the groundwater. No guarantees.”
They chose about eight refugees who looked strong enough and put them to work digging the well. In return, each would receive an extra rice cake and half a bowl of water.
Before the disaster, no one would have bothered with work like that.
Now, people fought over it. Without soldiers standing guard, it might have turned into a fight.
In the end, the crew leader lined everyone up and picked workers one by one.
Oakhaven Gardens didn’t have much water either, but to keep things stable, Alex set aside half a bucket each day for the soldiers and the workers.
The residents were short on water as well, but after what had happened that night, they tightened their use and kept conserving.
The crew leader thanked Alex, but they stuck to their own rules. After distributing water to the workers, whatever remained was poured into the tank and issued to the refugees.
The heat dragged on. Most of Westbridge’s deep wells had been destroyed in the quake. The few that remained couldn’t support the survivors.
The resettlement site was still better off. At least there was some water each day. Outside, people were already

dying of thirst.
For a while, water mattered more than food.
As rescue efforts slowed, the city government didn’t stop. They pulled together every department to find a solution.
In the end, they organized water convoys, sending tanker trucks through Grayport to the military base at Halloway. The base sat near Lake Evergreen, not far from Blackstone River, with the richest water resources in the
state.
The river had run dry, but the reservoir still held water.
