Chapter 468
Nicole eased onto the brake and picked up the binoculars.
Well, damn. The spike strip stretched more than ten feet across the road, every inch bristling with sharp steel teeth. Not a spot of rust on it, either. It had clearly seen plenty of use.
Bang!
Something struck the side window hard, leaving a bullet mark in the glass.
So they weren’t just ordinary highway robbers.
Nicole’s temper snapped. She pulled weapons and explosive packs from her storage space. If they insisted on doing this the hard way, they couldn’t blame anyone but themselves.
Annoyed as she was, she stayed clearheaded and waited in the car.
Cola was getting worked up, licking his chops as he watched the people outside.
Poppy had gone on alert as well, quietly drawing the gun Zeph had given her.
The standoff dragged on for 20 minutes. They stayed in the car, waiting to see who would lose patience first.
These people had gone to the trouble of laying a spike strip. If they wanted her out, they could come get her themselves.
In the end, the other side cracked first.
More than 20 people emerged from the blind curve ahead and the dirt mounds along the roadside. Men and women spilled onto the road, armed with knives, steel pipes, and baseball bats. Their faces were hard, their eyes cold with killing intent.
The leader carried a homemade handgun and stalked toward the Hummer, his expression dark.
Zeph’s gaze sharpened. “Other than the leader, none of them are carrying anything lethal.”
A mob of trash.
At least, that was how they looked from inside the car. The people outside clearly had a different opinion of themselves.
Too many easy wins had made them reckless.
After all this time, they had finally hooked a big fish, and the leader could barely hide his excitement.
A bulletproof Hummer was practically a war machine in the apocalypse. With a vehicle like that, they could wipe out the other hideouts without fear and keep expanding their territory.
Poppy kept her eyes on the rear. “Zeph, there are people behind us, too.”
Zeph glanced back. Sure enough, another group had appeared about 50 yards behind them, about 17 people in all, each carrying a cold weapon.
From the way the two sides watched each other, they clearly weren’t together. They had just picked the same prey.
Great. They were trapped front and back, sandwiched between the two groups.
Nicole hadn’t realized highway robbery had gotten this competitive. With this many people heading for the base,

how many would actually make it there alive?
The group in front had a gun, so they didn’t care about the rivals behind them. The leader aimed at Nicole and said coldly, “Leave the car and the food, and I’ll let you live.”
Their target was the car and the supplies. They could leave Nicole’s group to the thugs behind them.
“What was that?”
Maybe they were used to bullying people, or maybe everyone they had crossed paths with before had been too weak. Either way, their arrogance was almost laughable.
Nicole suppressed a smile and rolled down the window.
“You’re too far away. I can’t hear you.”
Confident in their numbers, the group took the bait and advanced another 30 feet. They even clustered together to make themselves look more intimidating.
