The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 482

Chapter 482

What a coincidence. Not only had they ended up in the same building, but Alex had been assigned Unit 303.

Nicole was relieved. At least they wouldn’t have to worry about terrible neighbors.

She smiled. “Captain, you’ve got good taste. My relatives happened to buy Units 301 and 302.”

“We only got these because of your tip,” Alex said. “Otherwise, we never would’ve moved fast enough to secure. them.”

In the end, both sides had benefited. If Alex hadn’t tipped Nicole off, she never would’ve gotten a villa, no matter how many points she earned.

On the drive back, Isaac brought up installing solar panels and converting the rooftop terraces into vegetable gardens.

With more than 100 mouths to feed, food, water, and daily necessities would always be their biggest concerns.

When they arrived back at Oakhaven Gardens, Nicole said, “Captain Landon, thanks for looking out for us this past year. We’ll be moving to the new district in a couple of days.”

Alex froze for a moment. “That soon?”

Living through it had made each day feel endless, but looking back, the year had passed in the blink of an eye.

Nicole and Zeph had spent an entire year at Oakhaven Gardens. Together, they had weathered one crisis after another. Without the two of them, the community probably wouldn’t have survived this long.

“When are you leaving?” Alex asked. “You’ve done so much for Oakhaven Gardens. We’d like to give you a proper send-off.”

Nicole smiled. “We lived here, too, so we weren’t helping anyone else. We were helping ourselves. Besides, this really did feel like home.”

If they hadn’t been forced to move, they honestly wouldn’t have wanted to leave.

The feeling was mutual. Without Nicole and Zeph, the residents of Oakhaven Gardens would’ve never had the chance to secure housing together in the new district.

For now, though, no one else was moving. They still wanted to build up more supplies first.

Zeph reminded them, “The new district has factories, and it’s close to the agricultural research institute’s farms. There should be plenty of jobs once things get going. Keep an eye out.”

They got back early enough that after an afternoon nap, all four of them went out to collect topsoil. The land had been fertile farmland before development began, so the soil was still rich.

As Nicole dug, she filled the truck while quietly storing much larger quantities inside her storage space. The truck never looked more than partly full, but her storage held far more.

After a good night’s sleep, they spent the next day stripping the house clean. Even the doors and windows came

off.

When it was finally time to leave, they didn’t linger. They slipped away before Alex had a chance to invite them to a farewell dinner.

Zeph drove the truck, with Nicole following behind in the Hummer.

Molly was devastated. She chased after the vehicles as fast as her legs could carry her. Cola never looked back, every bit the coldhearted heartbreaker.

Looking back one last time, Oakhaven Gardens stood quietly on its own, like a haven untouched by the outside world.

And yet, even this paradise in the apocalypse would soon be left behind. As for what lay ahead, no one knew.

One after the other, the two vehicles drove into the villa district of the new city.

Nicole thought she had gotten an early start, but others had beaten her to it. Construction crews were already hard at work on several luxury villas, arriving one after another to begin renovations.

Seeing how much work lay ahead, Zeph asked, “Want to hire some help?”

“No. We’ll do it ourselves.”

They had plenty of time. They might as well treat it as exercise.

There was no hurry to renovate the house itself. First, they needed to build the perimeter wall and claim the extra piece of land before anyone else did.

Nicole unloaded beds and furniture from storage. Since the bathroom wasn’t usable yet, they set up a portable toilet.

They were about to spend the day doing manual labor, so they started with a hearty meal.

After polishing off several generous dishes and taking a short break to digest, they got to work, starting with the foundation for the wall around the triangular lot.
