The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 489

Chapter 489

“It isn’t often Brandon gets along with someone this well. Have Poppy come over and play with him sometime,” Sven said.

Poppy needed friends, too. As long as she wanted to, Nicole had no reason to object.

After Sven left, Nicole asked Poppy, “So, what do you think of Brandon?”

“He’s nice, and he does what I tell him.”

“Do you want to keep playing with him?”

Poppy thought for a moment. “Can I?”

Nicole knew exactly what she was worried about. “It’s fine to make friends, but never let your guard down. Just because you’ve known someone a long time doesn’t mean you should trust them completely.”

“Okay! I’ll play with him once in a while.”

Zeph got back right on time, and the four of them sat down for lunch.

“Tom says he can build it. He recommends beech. It’s sturdy, impact-resistant, and hard enough to make a strong front gate.”

Beech?

Nicole had no idea what beech wood looked like.

She had plenty of lumber in storage, but most of it had been milled after the trees died. Aside from a couple of common species she could recognize, the rest all looked the same to her.

After lunch, the two of them went into the storage space and sorted through the lumber, knocking on each piece and inspecting the grain until they picked out the ones that seemed strongest.

Once Zeph delivered the wood, he came back for Nicole, and they headed to the apartment building.

The apartments were only meant as a fallback, so they had no plans to renovate them. Still, they needed proper doors and windows.

Alex and the others hadn’t moved in yet, but voices drifted down from the fifth and sixth floors. It was probably Weasel’s family and the relatives of the others.

With plenty of practice under their belts, they finished installing every door and window in less than half a day.

Since the apartments were so close together and surrounded by neighbors, they decided to install iron security bars before fitting the glass, just to be safe.

The apartment had a front room with another room farther inside.

After getting used to the villa’s generous space, the apartment felt almost claustrophobic. Nicole could already picture the problems once Alex and the others started sharing units.

Living practically on top of each other was bound to create friction. Whether they could keep the same harmony they had at Oakhaven Gardens would depend on Alex.

After locking up and heading downstairs, they heard footsteps coming from above.

A woman in a floral dress appeared a moment later.

Nicole stopped when she saw her.

Other than in the wealthy residential district, she couldn’t remember the last time she had seen a woman wearing makeup.

The woman’s bright red lipstick, graceful figure, striking features, and large, expressive eyes gave her an air that was both shrewd and spirited.

Any woman who could still look this glamorous three years into the apocalypse either had exceptional abilities herself or a very capable man taking care of her.

Nicole’s gaze flicked to the woman’s fair, delicate hands, and she had a pretty good idea whose wife this was.

The woman looked Nicole over as well, surprise flickering across her face.

Nicole didn’t stop to chat. She simply took out her keys and continued downstairs.

Sven’s house was finished quickly. Not long afterward, both families had their glass delivered.
