Chapter 585
Besides, Marcus ran off and got himself into this mess. Even if Jasper agreed to help, there was no way the authorities would.
Fiona felt like her heart was being ripped apart. “So what are we supposed to do? Just sit here and let them kill our son?”
Eric spent the entire night awake in his study, turning the situation over and over in his mind. By morning, he had made his decision: he was going to put up a reward.
If someone could bring his idiot son back alive, Eric was willing to pay ten thousand pounds of grain.
As soon as word spread, the entire community erupted.
Ten thousand pounds of grain was enough to keep a huge number of people fed for a long time.
Jasper didn’t comment when he heard the news, but bounty hunters came out of the woodwork, quickly forming teams and volunteering for the search.
Exhausted and under enormous pressure, Eric had his oldest son and the family’s bodyguards screen them for judgment and combat skills.
Nicole had just gotten back from patrol when Diana’s voice suddenly came over the radio.
“Nicole, you there?”
Diana was actually reaching out to her first. That was unexpected.
“I’m here,” Nicole said. “What’s up?”
Diana’s voice was as cool and distant as ever. “I’ve got a job for you. You interested?”
Nicole paused. “What kind of job?”
“A couple of days ago, I spotted a group of raiders hauling a huge load of supplies while I was out on patrol. I followed them and found their hideout deep in the mountains.”
The raiders were well armed and had plenty of people, but the cave they were using as a base was packed with supplies they had stolen since the disasters began. There was enough food and gear in there to support several people for a long time, with plenty left over to make life a lot more comfortable.
But there were only four people in Diana’s group, and they were badly outmatched in both manpower and firepower. That was why she reached out to Nicole.
If Nicole agreed to go, Zeph would come with her. With six people, they might actually have a shot at pulling it off and walking away with a fortune in supplies.
Nicole stayed quiet for a long moment, weighing her answer.
Fortune favored the bold. Diana and the others didn’t have a stockpile to fall back on, so Nicole understood why they were willing to take the risk.
She and Zeph were different; they had more than enough supplies. What’s more, Poppy and Cola were still back home counting on them.
