Chapter 597
need to thank us. You paid us to do a job.” Nicole shook Eric’s hand. “How’s Marcus doing?”
Just hearing his idiot son’s frame was enough to make Eric’s blood pressure spike. He quickly took his medication.
“If he ever does anything this stupid again, I’ll kill hlin myself.”
The helicopter was already waiting on the roof, ready to take off whenever they were.
Eric regarded the two of them with obvious admiration. “Do you need me to find someone to teach you how to fly it?”
“No, thanks,” Zeph said politely. “I already know how.”
Eric looked startled, then laughed. “You two really are full of surprises.
After the kidnapping, he was more convinced than ever that there was much more to them than met the eye. He decided to feel them out.
“Chief Anderson stopped by two days ago. He said the military found a cave deep in the mountains and rescued several hostages, but Marcus wasn’t among them. He wanted to know how I managed to find him and bring him back.”
Nicole immediately understood what he was getting at. “What did you tell him?”
Eric had spent his entire life in business and knew how to read people. He already sensed that Jasper had some kind of unusual connection to Nicole and Zeph, though it clearly wasn’t the relationship Eric had initially assumed.
Back then, Jasper was clearly fishing for information, but at the same time, he seemed to be trying to confirm a suspicion.
Eric wasn’t able to figure out exactly what he was after, but years of caution kept him from telling the truth. He simply said a group of bounty hunters found Marcus.
As for how they pulled it off, Eric said he hadn’t asked. People in that line of work valued discretion.
They brought Marcus home safely, and Eric paid them the promised reward. As far as he was concerned, that was the end of it.
Both men were seasoned and shrewd. They went back and forth for a while, each trying to draw something out of the other, but neither gave anything away.
Eventually, Jasper let the subject drop.
Unfortunately for Eric, Nicole and Zeph’s expressions gave him nothing either. They were far too calm.
Knowing when to stop, Eric dropped the subject and had Peter escort them up to the roof.
