Mitchell nodded and quickly led the group toward the rear entrance.

There were people sheltering from the acid rain there as well. The moment they saw Nicole and the others approaching with bulging backpacks, several of them perked up and exchanged looks.

Nicole knew that look all too well. Without saying a word, she pulled out her gun.

Everyone immediately looked away. A few even quietly backed off, clearly not interested in testing their luck. Mitchell took out one of the oversized protective suits and cautiously held part of it out in the rain.

The material held up. There was no visible damage.

The downpour showed no sign of letting up. When people saw them pull out brand-new protective suits, envy spread through the crowd.

“Where’d you get those? Can I borrow one? I need to get home and make dinner.”

No one was stupid enough to answer.

The suits were one-size-fits-all and loose enough to fit over their backpacks. Nicole had the others put theirs on first while she stood guard with her gun, keeping an eye on anyone who looked like they might try something. Once everyone else was sealed inside the acid-resistant suits, she pulled out her own and put it on.

The group stepped into the acid rain and started making their way back to the research institute with their heavy backpacks.

The rain kept pouring. Plenty of people were huddled beneath storefront awnings and overhangs along the road. Whenever they saw someone walking through the downpour in protective gear, the envy and resentment on their faces were impossible to miss.
