Beatrice spoke up. "You guys should go to the military base. Don't let me hold you back."
Hughie and Jeremy went back and forth over it, but neither could change the other's mind.
Nicole finally offered a suggestion. "Why don't you all go to the military base first? If it doesn't work out, you can figure something else out from there."
That made sense. This wasn't the time to keep arguing over it anyway. And there was always a chance the military base had changed its rules.
Hughie brightened. "Alright. Then we'll go together. That way, we can still watch each other's backs."
Nicole answered as tactfully as she could. "You guys should go ahead. We still have a lot to take care of, so we probably won't be ready for a while."
Hughie, never one to overthink things, said, "That's fine. We don't have much to pack. We can help you load everything when the time comes."
Jeremy was much better at reading the room. He discreetly tugged on Hughie's arm and quickly said, "Alright. We'll wait for you at the military base. You and Zeph be careful."
Nicole hugged them. "You guys too. Stay safe."
On the way home, Hughie still didn't understand.
"Nicole and Zeph are only two people, and they have so much stuff. Who else is going to help them if we don't? What if they run into bandits or someone tries to rob them on the road? Are they supposed to protect themselves or their supplies?"
Jeremy explained, "Nicole and Zeph have been stocking up in Westbridge for years. There's no way they don't have a huge amount of supplies.
"They're leaving so suddenly that they probably can't take everything with them. They need time to figure out what to do with whatever they have to leave behind."
Supplies meant survival. These days, there were times when people couldn't even trust their own families, much less put their lives in someone else's hands.
Jeremy wouldn't have done it either, so he couldn't blame Nicole for keeping some distance.
Only then did Hughie remember that Nicole still had a plane and a huge stockpile of fuel.
The plane was one thing, but there was no way they could take all that fuel with them. They would have to move it somewhere else or trade it away.
Only then did Hughie realize how much he had overlooked. He just hoped Nicole and Zeph could get everything sorted out safely and make it to the military base.
No one said anything else. They went home and hurried to pack.
They didn't have much. Everything fit into a single SUV.
