Eric kept talking as if he were giving Marcus his final instructions.
"If you're lucky enough to survive all this, remember to get married and have kids. Build the Robinson family back up."
If having children wasn't possible, that was fine, too.
Still, Eric didn't want Marcus to spend the rest of his life alone. At the very least, he wanted Marcus to find someone to share his life with, someone he could rely on and who could rely on him.
Marcus turned his face away, his eyes burning.
"Honey, something's wrong!" Fiona's panicked voice came from downstairs. "The official announcement is out."
Dawn was approaching, yet the world had never felt darker.
The authorities issued an emergency evacuation notice.
After the satellite cluster repeatedly struck Mount Graypine, monitoring equipment detected frequent tremors around the area. Officials warned that the impacts could trigger a volcanic eruption and advised residents to pack their belongings and evacuate.
Residents had three options: they could move at least 60 miles away and wait for further updates, relocate to the government base in Jazenville, or, if they qualified, apply for admission to a military base.
The authorities would provide escorts for anyone choosing either of the first two options.
Given a choice, no one wanted to abandon their home. And getting into the government base in Jazenville required payment in food. How were the poorest survivors supposed to come up with that?
As for the military base, that wasn't even something most ordinary people could realistically consider.
Eric's expression changed immediately.
"Hurry up and pack. Take everything we can carry. Move!"
If the authorities were willing to order an evacuation, then the risk of an eruption had to be serious. And if it was anything like the eruption that destroyed Ardelon, the consequences would be catastrophic.
Once the announcement spread, the poorer districts would descend into chaos.
If they didn't get out before the crowds and ended up trapped in the mass evacuation, the danger on the road would increase a hundredfold. They might not even make it to Jazenville alive.
The Robinsons had too many people to rely on just one mode of transportation, so they kept both the plane and their vehicles.
