The Apocalypse Survival Manual (Three Days Before Doomsday, I Stockpiled Billions) novel Chapter 682

The poorest survivors had no choice but to evacuate on foot, while government agencies and other official organizations used trucks to transport essential personnel and supplies, sending them ahead to safer areas.

The roads were packed with people, and cars could barely move. No one dared honk.

Too many survivors had nothing left to lose. Tempers were already at the breaking point, and the smallest argument could turn violent.

Blocking a car was nothing. Some people even picked up rocks and smashed the windows.

When traffic came to a complete stop, people simply climbed onto the roofs of cars.

If the people inside refused to open the doors, they stomped on the roof. If anyone dared get out, another group would rush in and try to steal the vehicle.

At that point, plenty of people no longer cared what happened to them.

Even with soldiers and police trying to keep order, there was only so much they could do.

Once people stopped caring whether they lived or died, threats lost their meaning. Some probably would have welcomed a bullet if it meant everything ended quickly.

Zeph had lived through this in his previous life, so he deliberately stayed away from the evacuation points and took a long detour around the city. Even inside an armored vehicle, neither of them let their guard down.

Ordinary people were fleeing, but so were criminals and gangs, and plenty of them robbed others along the way. There was always a chance someone might throw a grenade at them.

Nicole and Zeph took turns driving and keeping watch. Poppy and Cola stayed alert in the back seat, too.

The dirt roads were rough, forcing them to move slowly. Plenty of survivors had already formed their own groups and left early, hoping to get ahead of the main evacuation.

Along the way, they passed several fights and robberies.

Things were getting ugly.

There wasn't much point in robbing people who had nothing. A Hummer, though, looked like an easy prize to anyone desperate enough.

Criminals and other groups of evacuees watched the vehicle with hungry eyes, exchanging looks and subtle signals as they considered making a move.

Nicole never gave them the chance.

She wore body armor, her helmet strapped on tight, and lowered the window. The moment a man with an iron bar started toward them looking for trouble, she raised her weapon and fired a short burst.

He dropped on the spot after a bullet struck him in the head.
