Gavin had planned to slash the tires, but once he got closer, the Hummer made him hesitate.
It was rugged, built like a tank, and still looked almost new, nothing like a vehicle that had been through years of disasters.
It had to belong to someone rich or powerful. Otherwise, there was no way anyone could have kept it in such good shape.
The windows were tinted, so he couldn't see inside.
He quietly circled the Hummer and noticed that the window on the sheltered side was cracked open slightly for ventilation. He leaned in and peered through the gap.
Well, damn. There was a woman inside, and she looked like she was alone.
Gavin's pulse immediately quickened.
He couldn't see her face clearly, but judging by her figure, she had obviously been eating a lot better than most people.
Nicole sensed something was wrong and kept her eyes half closed as she watched the men outside through the tinted glass.
All of them carried makeshift weapons. One had a bloodstained baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire, another carried a sharpened steel pipe, and the others had an iron bar and kitchen knives.
So far, she hadn't seen any guns.
Anyone willing to rob people in the middle of a sandstorm like this was probably part of a local gang preying on evacuees.
Three of them had badly scarred, pitted faces, most likely from the acid rain. The damage made them look even more menacing.
Maybe they felt safe because they outnumbered her, or maybe they simply didn't see a woman as much of a threat. Once they realized she wasn't holding a gun, most of their caution disappeared.
Several of them moved around to the front of the Hummer. One man kicked the door and flashed a mouthful of yellow teeth as he leered at her.
"Morning, beautiful. Time to wake up."
Once Nicole was sure none of them had guns, she slowly lowered the window and put on a frightened expression. "What do you want? My husband's out looking for food. He'll be back soon."
"Your husband? In a sandstorm like this, he's probably not coming back."
The moment they got a clear look at her smooth, fair face, their eyes nearly popped out of their heads, and their comments got even filthier.
"But don't worry. From now on, we're all your husbands. We'll take good care of you."
A bloodstained knife tapped against the glass.
