Chapter 70

When Nicole woke up that morning, she found the bunnies using the bathroom properly. Even the ten baby

rabbits.

Cola had figured out how to handle them, too.

Any time one of them went wherever it felt like, he would grab Ash or Snowy and go after them, teeth bared, making it very clear. If the parents weren’t keeping the babies in line, he would start eating one of them.

Cola kept the rabbits in check, and the rabbits, in turn, kept the babies under control.

As it turned out, they could learn after all.

Nicole couldn’t help laughing.

Her dog had gone from stray to boss overnight. Now, he had twelve little followers under him.

Zeph and the others didn’t get back until around noon. By then, Nicole and Beatrice had already cleaned and prepped all the organ meat.

They sliced up the intestines and liver, added some lean pork, and seasoned everything for a stew. The larger pieces were braised until tender, then cut into chunks.

Lunch was simple. Each person got a bowl of pork offal stew, along with some sautéed pork on the side.

They had dinner planned out, too: pan-fried pork heart with onions, and a peppery pork stew. The rest would be saved for the next day.

Nicole provided the greens and onions, while Hughie’s group covered rice, flour, oil, and fuel.

Zeph never held back, either. Whenever he brought something, it was always more than enough.

No one here kept score. That was why they worked.

Jeremy leaned back, satisfied. “Nicole, you should just handle cooking from now on. We’re wasting food when we try.”

Nicole didn’t even hesitate. “Not happening. I’ll cook once in a while. That’s it.”

Beatrice looked at them. “By the way, what took you so long getting back? Nicole and I thought something had happened.”

“The trade went fine,” Jeremy said. “We had time, so we checked out a nearby office building. Didn’t find anything.”

He went on.

“Rice at the department store went up again. Less supply, too. The group we’re dealing with didn’t try anything shady, though. No price hikes, no tails. They’ve got some kind of code.

“At 400 a pound, most people can’t afford it anyway. They’re not moving much in a day, and they’re risking getting caught every time they sell. Buyers like us are their best customers.”

Nicole checked the rice they brought back. The quality was the same as before.

The others looked uncertain.

“How do we even eat this?”

Flood-soaked rice wasn’t exactly reassuring.

“Seal it up and store it. We’ll only use it if we really have to,” Nicole said. “And keep an eye out. If other people eat it and don’t get sick, we can mix a little into regular meals later.”

Hughie nodded.

“That makes sense. Oh, and that group doesn’t just sell rice,” he added. “They also trade. Cigarettes, alcohol, medicine… All of that works.”

They had some of those supplies, especially medicine.

Hospitals were already running out. Even when they had stock, it was sold by the pill, and at insane prices. Having something valuable meant having options.

Hughie looked hopeful. “Should we trade for better rice?”

Nicole shook her head.

“We’re already spending 100 grand. That’s enough to draw attention. Don’t push it. Food’s scarce, but medicine will be even harder to get. We can trade for more later. No need to rush.”

After lunch, Nicole left with Zeph.
