Zeph noticed something in the rearview mirror. Someone was chasing after the Marauder so hard he had apparently lost a shoe.

He frowned. "That looks like Marcus."

Nicole stared at him. "What?"

That made no sense. Even if the Robinsons left Westbridge, the Jazenville government base would've been the obvious place to go. Why would Marcus come all the way out here?

She didn't buy it. "Are you sure you're seeing that right?"

Zeph slowed down so she could take a look.

Sure enough, a filthy, ragged man was running after them. He looked so ridiculous that Nicole almost didn't recognize him.

But he kept chasing for hundreds of yards without giving up, even after losing a shoe.

Nicole stared into the rearview mirror. The longer she looked, the more he really did look like Marcus.

Damn it. She was finally able to drive the Marauder openly, and somehow, Marcus showed up again.

Nicole groaned. "Go, go, go! Speed up!"

They had history with Marcus. She couldn't exactly turn around and kill him, so avoiding him was the only option.

Zeph stepped on the gas, and the Marauder tore down the ruined highway.

Nicole kept watching the rearview mirror as Marcus grew smaller and smaller until he was nothing more than a dark speck in the distance.

Then, even that disappeared.

Now the Marauder would have to go back into hiding again. Her good mood vanished.

"Why couldn't he just stay at the government base? What is he doing all the way out here?"

Zeph stayed calm. "Probably Eric's idea."

The Robinsons were once influential in Westbridge, but they had no real ties to the military or government. In the apocalypse, money didn't mean what it used to, and the family wouldn't have mattered much at a government base.

Eric probably sent him here to give the Robinsons another chance at survival.

Whatever happened to Marcus along the way, though, he had clearly fallen on hard times.
