Chapter 73

Nicole couldn’t help feeling a little jealous.
Luckily, Cola still knew who his human was.
Every time training ended, he ran straight back to Nicole, pressing into her arms. Whenever she went out, he would grab his food bowl and follow. 1
There was no helping it. Zeph’s cooking was so bad that even the dog wouldn’t touch it.
Nicole had to prep kibble ahead of time.
Watching how much Cola had changed, Beatrice couldn’t help throwing shade at Hughie and Jeremy.
“Look at you two. Can’t even measure up to a dog.”
It rained every day, but no one stayed idle.
Beatrice had been training those two nonstop. It was hard to tell if their stamina improved, but judging by the bruises on their faces, they were definitely tougher.
Nicole got curious and sparred with them for a bit. They dodged surprisingly well.
“Oh, you think you can hit us now? Not happening.”
They were grinning like idiots.
Compared to the despair on other floors, things on the 18th floor were improving.
Everyone was getting stronger, even Poppy. She had already started reading on her own, sounding out words and reciting simple stories.
Nicole finally got hydroponics working. Looking at the row of bright green lettuce on the balcony, she smiled to herself.
The hybrid seeds were resilient. With the nutrient solution, they grew fast, bigger than normal greens. So far, there had been no pests either.
After finishing outside, she went into the storage space to cut some hay for the rabbits.
The grass came from Mount Westbridge. She had also brought back wild plants and saplings. Anything useful got planted. The rest stayed stored.
The garden was packed with furniture and building materials, but there was still plenty of open soil.
Nicole didn’t use it for crops.
Food wasn’t her problem right now; time was. She didn’t have enough of it to stay inside and farm properly.
So instead, she filled the space with fruit trees.
They were low maintenance but paid off in the long term.
When she came back out, Cola was pawing at the door. Someone was calling for her from downstairs.
Nicole went down to check and saw a young man helping an elderly woman stand.
“Hi,” he said politely. “Do you know how to treat injuries?”

Through the metal gate, Nicole saw the woman’s pained expression.
“What’s wrong?”

“My grandma hurt her lower back,” he said. “The hospital’s out of medicine. They suggested needle therapy.”
His name was Victor Goodman. He wore glasses, looked clean-cut, and was soft-spoken.
“I heard you know some alternative medicine. Could you take a look?”
“I know a bit,” Nicole said. “But I’m not that experienced. Are you okay with that?”
They weren’t, but the pain was bad enough that the woman couldn’t sit or lie down properly. She hadn’t slept all night.
Nicole was about to refuse, but then she paused.
“I can treat her, but I make no guarantees. And I charge.”
Victor hesitated.
“Can I pay later? My money’s in the bank. Once the flood’s over, I’ll get it to you.” As if worried she might say no, he continued, “I can add interest.”
