Nicole drove the truck while Zeph took the SUV. As soon as they left the base, they realized someone was following them.
Neither of them panicked. They checked in over the radio, then split off in opposite directions.
Kai hesitated for a second before shouting, "Split up! Don't lose either of them!"
The truck and SUV looked filthy and worn on the outside, but both ran perfectly.
Nicole pulled on body armor and a combat helmet, then stepped on the gas. She led the men chasing her around for a while before leaving them far behind.
Once she reached a secluded ravine, she moved both herself and the truck into the storage space.
The Cyclone Crew pushed their beat-up vehicle as hard as they could, only to reach the ravine and find nothing.
The truck was gone.
Before they could make sense of it, a gunshot cracked through the air, and everyone dove for cover.
A moment later, they realized the shot had blown out one of their tires. For a second, they thought someone was shooting at them.
With Nicole nowhere in sight, they had no choice but to turn around and head back empty-handed.
By the time Nicole reached the foot of Mount Cedar, Zeph, Poppy, and Cola were already waiting for her.
"Everything okay?" Zeph asked.
"Just a bunch of amateurs."
Everyone allowed into the military base had to meet basic fitness standards, but this crew was clearly made up of lazy opportunists who got by through scams and intimidation.
Whatever ambition they once had had long since been worn down by years of disasters and hardship. Now they survived by pushing newcomers into doing the dangerous work for them.
If anything serious happened, they were probably the first ones to run.
"What about you?" Nicole asked. "Any trouble?"
"No. I lost them."
The SUV handled well, so Zeph shook the men following him without much trouble.
